It's so easy to get stuck in patterns that sabotage the kind of life you want to live. No one really talks about the one key skill that we need to develop in order to effectively get un-stuck, and break those patterns successfully, but somehow we're expected to know how to do it to function in the world. So much of the patterns we get stuck in are rooted in unconscious processes happening outside

of our awareness. Think about this: have you ever found yourself caught up in the same stressful thought loops, difficult moods, or destructive habits, that you've played out before, and said to yourself in frustration, "why do I keep doing this?"

We get it, you're in the right place. For adults, kids, teens, couples & families, conscious engagement is an actual skill that you can develop and get better at so that you can more clearly understand why you do what you do, and uncover how you can meaningfully and actively change those habits and patterns that don't serve you, into ones that do serve you. We're a group of down-to-earth, genuinely caring humans, who also happen to be deeply knowledgeable psychologists passionate about supporting you and your loved ones on your journey toward cultivating the life you want. As we continue to witness g3nocide and global vi0lence, amidst all the feelings, you might notice an urge to shut down—become numb.

😰 That’s your nervous system signalling distress from chronic or overwhelming activation—a natural response to traumatic exposure.

Here’s an internal conflict many people face:

💔 We can become vulnerable to the impacts of burn out and vicarious trauma through continuous exposure to witnessing harm, but shutting down, disconnecting, and isolating also aren’t healthy or effective alternatives.

🤔 So, how can we balance supportive mental health care with staying connected to community and maintaining meaningful engagement in what’s happening? How do we combat the creeping feelings of helplessness while also respecting and acknowledging our own personal limitations?

💙Here’s some tips to help ground your nervous system and support resiliency and sustainable engagement.

Anxiety can make us want to run and hide. However, avoiding our worries can unintentionally add fuel to the fear, further building the urge to escape, and trapping us in a viscous cycle. 🌪️

So, how do you break the anxiety cycle?🤔

Anxiety is a powerful force, often tied to complex psychological mechanisms and deep rooted wounds. Breaking the cycle longterm typically involves gradually and safely addressing the internal source of the fear, supporting your nervous system to return to a stable sense of internal safety and security. In other words, truly building trust with yourself. ✨

Unpacking anxiety is not easy, but it’s worth it. 💞

Connecting with a therapist can help you safely approach anxiety, better understand the root of your challenges and support you in breaking the cycle.🕊️

Virtual therapy gives you a lot more freedom and flexibility about how and where you have your sessions. To help make the most of your session time, you might consider some steps you can take to prepare for your session.

1. Ensure you’re in a safe and private space where you can speak freely. This might mean scheduling appointments for a time when you’ll be home, or if you’re on the road, this might mean pulling over to a nearby parking lot for the duration of your session. ✨

2. Wherever you are for your session, you get to decide what you have available to you to best support yourself in your journey. You might want to get into your comfiest sweats, keep your pet nearby, make your favourite tea—and don’t fo tissues! Do whatever you need to make yourself comfy 🥰

3. Your video call links become active up to 8 hours ahead of your session start time giving you lots of time to test it out early and ensure that your technology is working fine. When you click on the join session link a new window will pop up where you can preview and configure your audio, camera, and mic settings, and even select a background filter if you’d like! 🔊

4. Therapy sessions offer you the time, space and support to really check in with yourself and how you’re doing. After session’s over, we often go back to our busy lives and endless to-do lists. Keeping a journal or your notes app nearby during your session can be a helpful way to track important insights that come up during therapy sessions. 📝

5. It’s normal to feel emotionally tender, or tired after a session. You might consider how you can support and nourish yourself to facilitate your integration process. This might mean taking a moment before session to get grounded you’ve had a busy day, and maybe giving yourself a moment after session to move your body, have some water and regroup before getting back to your routine. ❤️

What else helps you prepare for virtual sessions?

For most of us, commuting can come with a ton of stressors, negatively impacting mental health. 💥

Virtual therapy dramatically improves not only our access to high quality mental health care, but can also improve our mental health by saving us time, money, and energy involved in getting to counselling appointments. ✨

Online counselling means you get all the same professional mental health care, without the stress, cost, lost time, or energy drain of commuting. 💯

Getting to counselling doesn’t have to be source of stress. Virtual therapy sessions allow you to focus your energy on your healing journey in therapy, without having to worry about getting to therapy, leaving you with more time, money, and energy to spend doing more of the things you love ♥️

Trauma-informed therapy starts with understanding that trauma affects how we relate to others, ourselves, and the world. It's about creating a space where your voice matters and your safety comes first. 🌅

The idea of “safety” is often reduced to just physical safety, but this can contribute to the perpetuation of more harm, and create more barriers to appropriately addressing and healing trauma. 😣

We know safety that means a lot more than that. 💙

💭What does it mean to you to be emotionally, psychologically, culturally, and spiritually safe, too?

Getting to know the subtle and not so subtle cues of when you’re nervous system is dysregulated can be a real game changer. 🧠✨

When our nervous system picks up some kind of stress or perceived threat, it automatically sends signals to our brain that tell us to mobilize: run away or stand our ground and fight. We might feel our heart pumping, muscles getting tense, you’re ready to take action. This is our sympathetic nervous system at work trying to get us to safety, though not sustainable for very long. 🤺💪🏃‍♀️

When our system feels overwhelmed, we might go into a state of collapse, freeze or shut down. Feeling numb, checked out, like pulling the blankets over our head, hoping the threat will eventually pass by and leave us alone. Or we can engage in fawning or trying to appease or show submission to the perceived threat, a social engagement approach to survival. This can look like acting small or people pleasing. These responses signify activation of the dorsal vagal parasympathetic nervous system. Not a great place to live. 🫣🥺😶‍🌫️

When we’re feeling grounded, safe, at ease, present, engaged and connected, that means our ventral vagal parasympathetic nervous system is engaged. This is typically where we want to be: where we can access play, creativity, spirituality, and more. Though it might feel like a foreign place for a lot of us. We can use specific strategies to help us come back to this place over and over, encouraging this calm and balanced feeling to increasingly become our norm.🧘‍♀️🪷❤️
