Every year, the month of April is dedicated to raising awareness of Parkinson's. World Parkinson's Day is celebrated on April 11 in honour of the birthday of Dr. James Parkinson, who first identified Parkinson's disease more than 200 years ago (1817).

During this year's Parkinson's Awareness Month, we want to celebrate the strength and resilience of the Parkinson's community across Canada and share their stories and successes to show that living well with Parkinson's is still possible.

We encourage Canadians to help us raise awareness by following along on social media and visiting parkinson.ca/PAM.

Ethnic and Gender Disparity in Access to Deep Brain Stimulation
Run Dates: Ongoing

The University of Alberta, Parkinson and Movement Disorder Program is seeking volunteers to participate in our study “Ethnic and Gender Disparities in Access to Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS)”. The goal of this project is to find out what the potential factors are contributing to the different access to DBS. Our current data showed that much less women and non-White received DBS. Therefore, the study will focus on women and racialized people to better understand the potential challenges they face.

We are seeking volunteers to do an interview and a few questionnaires.

Who are eligible to participate in the study?
• You have a diagnosis of Parkinson’s Disease, tremor or dystonia
• Females aged 18 to 75 and/or
• People do not identify as European descent/White
• Individuals who were suggested by their doctors that DBS could be beneficial, but have not yet undergone the procedure
• People who are reluctant to go through DBS work-up or surgery

What is required of the participants?
• Engage in a virtual interview, lasting for 30-40 minutes
• Answer questions related to your disease experience, symptoms, decision-making, any relevant knowledge on DBS

If you are interested, please call or leave a message for Gail Dimapilis at 780-777-4960 or email [email protected]
