For many small business, such as mine, testimonials help us grow. I was thrilled to receive this compliment as it’s a passion to help equestrians like Tegan, who want to offer more, and enjoy their horses for a lifetime.

“Hey Janet! Just wanted to give you a small Admiral update. The last three weeks I’ve noticed a huge difference in his behaviour and temperament. His flight risk status has heavily decreased. He’s eating almost all his food with very little spillage. He’s been an absolute dream to do ground work with. And isn’t fighting me with his foot anymore. He’s also able to comfortably eat from his bucket on the ground without constantly shifting his weight or yanking his head back.

Thank you so much for helping my boy and we can’t wait to book again come spring time!!”

It was an exciting Sunday morning on the job. She was not even 500 meters from the client’s barn. As I drove off, the yearling was able to clear the fence, then proceeded to follow, stirring up the paddock of horses that I was going to treat. It took about 20 minutes before the herd of horses settled in.

PART 3 - “ Complexities of the Equine TMJ”

Did you know that there’s a large percentage of horses that are diagnosed with temporomandibular joint dysfunction? Why is that? I’ll dig a bit deeper into this for you so that I can paint you a better picture.

In my clinical practice of massage, when a patient presents with TMJ dysfunction it’s usually because of stress, emotional issues, whiplash associated disorder due to a car accident, a sports injury, or a blow to the head. With horses, it’s much more difficult to alleviate the dysfunction permanently due to resistance.

Because bone is a healthy, living tissue, it will remodel and change due to pressures. So, if a horse’s mouth has resistance, the mouth, especially the TMJ and bite will change over time in a negative way.

In the horse world it’s pretty difficult to avoid resistance with our horses. What is resistance you ask? Resistance is anything that prevents a horse from moving its jaw to its natural range of motion.

Have you ever seen a horse have the ability to open its mouth to lick and chew with a nose band? Or, how about a grazing muzzle? Resistance is when leaving a halter on your horse for long periods of time, grazing. Even how you manage hay nets can cause resistance. Just the act of placing a bit in the horse’s mouth is causing resistance.

The TMJ of the horse is the most active joint in its body. The most common signs of disfunction of the TMJ is the ability to effectively break down food for digestion. This is characterized by a slower than normal chewing cycle, dropping of food, and resisting a bridle. Pain can cause inadequately chewed feed bolus’ to be swallowed, thereby predisposing these horses to impaction colic.Inspection of the teeth can reveal incisor malocclusion or inability to oppose the upper or lower incisors. Chronic forms of disfunction can be accompanied by masseter (cheek) muscle and temporal muscle (in the pocket above the eye), atrophy.

Then, why do we put resistance on our horses if we are causing them so much grief? We want to be able to enjoy our horses, whether we ride competitively or for enjoyment, or as a pasture pet. There is an answer to this dilemma, as there are Equine Therapists, like myself, who offer services to keep your horse’s TMJ in a healthy state of function and prevention.

In my repertoire of equine therapies, I will treat the TMJ in every session, as this is the most important joint in the horse’s body. This service can be all on its own or it can be combined with a treatment plan. If you want to know, more, contact me either by phone or message. I am here to keep your horse in motion and healthy as a horse!
