Today is International Overdose Awareness Day. This is a day not only to acknowledge the immense loss caused by overdoses across the globe, but also to commit to fighting to end the stigma around asking for assistance and support while struggling with addiction. The theme for this year's event is "together we can," emphasizing the role a community has in working to support those who struggle with addiciton. We at Our House pride ourselves on being a crucial aspect of that support, and we thank all of you who have helped us on our mission. 💙

Statistically, 2SLGBTQIA+ people are more likely to experience poor mental health and substance use compared with cis-gendered, heterosexual individuals. Stigma is a big contributor and intersectional identities compound mental health impacts. We believe that mental health is a universal human right and we're working hard to make that a reality. Join us in being loud and proud to support the 2SLGBTQIA+ community this Pride Month and always.

This week is International Mental Health Week, which hopes to bring awareness to, destigmatize, and educate on mental and physical health for men. At Our House, we help our clients discover ways to value both themselves and their health, and support them as they strive for a healthier life free from addiction. Even small, every-day decisions make an impact in our lives, and we hope that this week gives you a moment to reflect on some of those decisions in your own life. 💙

🌈 Happy Pride Month! 🌈

As we celebrate the vibrancy and diversity of the LGBTQ+ community, let's also shed light on the important issue of mental health. Did you know that LGBTQ+ individuals are at a higher risk of experiencing mental health challenges? In fact, they are 3 times more likely to experience major depression and anxiety disorders compared to their heterosexual counterparts.

This Pride Month, let's stand together to support and uplift each other. Your mental health matters, and there is help available. Reach out, speak up, and let's create a world where everyone can live with pride and without fear. 🏳️‍🌈💚

Another staff spotlight! Taylor Adams is a Senior Addictions Counsellor at Our House who provides group and individual therapy for our men, as well as supporting and guiding our clinical team. Taylor chose to work in addictions counselling early on in her academic career, and finds great meaning in helping people overcome their addictions. Our House "represents a safe, home-like environment that facilitates the comfort needed when healing the parts of self that need some extra love and attention." In terms of what brings her most joy, she mentions helping clients build their self esteem through therapy, although her greatest joy is "watching the men not only uncover special parts of themselves, but seeing them begin to accept and share those special parts with their loved ones and support systems."

When asked what she would say to anyone looking to join the program, she said: “It takes a strong and motivated man in a world that isn’t set up for the expression of male emotions to admit they need a helping hand. You have come to the right place. I can’t wait to hear your story.” When she's not helping our clients she enjoys spending time with her friends and loved ones, spending time outdoors in the summer, as well as watercolour painting.

Thank you Taylor for all that you do at Our House, and thank you to our community for allowing us to have people like Taylor to support our mission. 💙

This week, Mental Health Week, gives us time to talk with one another about our struggles with mental health, as well as giving each other support through compassion. Kindness in the face of suffering is one of the most important things we can do for our communities, especially in the case of suffering from addiction, which is often stigmatized. This week, we all should consider ways that we can participate in acts of kindness for those around us, as well as thinking of ways to be kinder to ourselves. 💙
