Kari Freeman Psychology

Kari Freeman Psychology A Registered Psychologist in Edmonton working with children, teenagers, and adults across Alberta. I am LGBTQIA2S+ allied. I believe therapy is collaborative.

I am experienced working with a variety of mental health concerns including trauma/Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), anxiety, depression, body-focused repetitive behaviors (including skin picking and hair pulling), suicidal ideation, self-harm, anger, addiction, eating concerns, and behavioral issues. I am a

lso passionate about perinatal mental health (pregnancy and postpartum), providing parenting support, and working with birth traumas. I tailor my approach to each person I see, and I seek input from clients to make sure we’re on the right track. I believe finding the right "fit" between therapist and client is very important, as we need to trust and feel safe in order to be vulnerable. I offer a free phone consultation to see if we're a good match. One of the ways I tailor my approach is through maintaining training in a number of therapeutic approaches. This includes Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), Habit Reversal Training (HRT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Narrative Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Behavioral Therapy, and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT). I'm also a trained provider for Perinatal Mental Health services (pregnancy and postpartum). We have many different chapters of our lives, and problems are only one part of the story. I love getting-to-know people outside of problems, and empowering clients to recognize and use their unique strengths to work toward change. If you think I'd be a good fit for you, please reach out! I'm currently seeing clients across Alberta through online therapy services. I offer flexible daytime, evening, and weekend hours. I'm very excited to ✨officially✨ announce I'm launching a mental health therapy group for moms of little ones age 0-12 months called "All About Mom”. Here is the info for the very first group!

Starting a group for those in the postpartum period is something I've wanted to do for a long time. It feels SO good to finally have it in the works 🙌🥳

Why try this group?

✅ Build your village and find much needed social support and validation

✅ Learn tools and skills to cope with mental health challenges in the postpartum period

✅ Learn more about postpartum mental health from a Perinatal Mental Health Certified (PMH-C) facilitator

✅ Gain financial benefits as group therapy is far less expensive than individual therapy per session

✅ Connect and build trust with the same people every week in a closed group setting (not drop-in)

I'm planning to make this group a part of my regular practice and offer it on a seasonal basis. Please pass the info to anyone who may be interested/benefit 💜

For those looking for more information or to register, see the link to my website in my bio. Spaces are limited so register today!

November 17, 2023 is

Today, we share information and awareness about a global health issue: preterm birth.

Often times, parents are unprepared for preterm birth experiences. Going through the stress of things like bedrest, preterm labor, NICU stays, and caring for a preterm infant causes an array of mental health concerns including grief, confusion, intense worry, guilt, and trauma.

If you or someone you know is struggling, help is available. Please reach-out for more information about therapy options through the link in bio 💜

The lack of sunlight at this time of year impacts our mental health. We tend to feel tired, lethargic, and low. It also doesn’t help that November is typically a very busy month, the weather is getting colder, and the stress of the holidays is approaching. No wonder seasonal depression is so common!

If you’re struggling to manage the darkness, please reach-out! Help is available 💫

Here’s to getting through yet another winter! ❄️🥶😴

It's hard to know how best to support a NICU parent.

The NICU is never part of a preferred birth plan. Having a baby in the NICU is scary, unexpected, shocking, and often traumatizing. Most NICU parents are just trying to survive.

During times of great pain and fear, it can be very tempting to try and encourage positive thinking. While meaning well, this often comes across as invalidating and leads to further feelings of isolation, fear, shame, and guilt for NICU parents.

Statements beginning with "at least..." are often intended to force positive thinking. Some common statements NICU parents hear include:

"at least the NICU staff are helpful"
"at least you're close to the NICU"
"at least you can stay at the NICU"
"at least you know what's wrong"
"at least they're doing tests to see what's wrong"
"at least your job is understanding"
"at least you have support"
"at least you can pump and deliver breastmilk"
"at least your baby is where they need to be"
..and for those of us who had to endure the NICU more than once...

"at least you've been through this before and know what to expect"

Rather than trying to force positive thinking, try more supportive responses like:

💜 Letting NICU parents know you're available if/when they want to talk
💜 Listening and helping NICU parents identify how they're feeling
💜 Offering support (see my previous post for tips on helping out)
💜 Helping NICU parents connect with mental health services

If you or someone you know is going through a NICU stay or suffering with the memories of one, support is available. Reach-out through link in bio 💜

September is

If you have a NICU parent in your life, here are some suggestions for offering support.

Above all: be available. The NICU is extremely stressful and traumatizing. NICU parents often don't know what they need as they're just trying to survive. Try to anticipate needs and take care of the basics to give NICU parents one less thing to worry about 🌸

If you or someone you know is struggling with a NICU journey, support is available. Reach-out through the link in bio 💜

Access to LGBTQIA2S+ inclusive education and medical care is life-saving.

Su***de is the second leading cause of death among youth aged 10-24.

Members of the LGBTQIA2S+ community are at significantly higher risk for su***de and mental health concerns than their peers.

Trans and non-binary youth are at an even higher risk.

This is largely due to discrimination and the systemic homophobia deeply embedded in our society causing a lack of inclusive and safe spaces for these youth.

The protests happening today are in direct opposition to my personal and professional values.

Everyone is welcome through my doors. Today and everyday.

It’s official! I’m CERTIFIED in Perinatal Mental Health!! 💜💜💜

PMH-C (Perinatal Mental Health Certified) is a designation by providing a standard of education and experience to specialize in the field of perinatal (pregnancy and postpartum) mental health.

At minimum, PMH-C’s have:
- Two years experience working with the perinatal population
- Advanced training in the field of perinatal mental health
- Completed a certification exam
- Regular specialized trainings to maintain certification

As someone with lived experience going through mental health difficulties in the perinatal period, this certification means the world to me. I know the uniqueness of perinatal mental health, and I value being certified as a way to build trust with clients struggling in this area.

Alongside individual therapy for clients in the perinatal period, I also regularly present with to spread perinatal mental health awareness. I feel deeply grateful for the opportunity to walk alongside the perinatal population and be a part of this community 🌸

Any healthcare provider from any discipline can get certified. At this point, there are less than 30 PMH-C’s in all of Alberta. I am so beyond honored to be one of them.

Friendly reminder: even if asking when someone is planning to have a baby/have another baby is coming from a loving place, these questions are still inappropriate. Many people find these questions invasive, triggering, and hard to manage.

There are so many other topics to make conversations around. We don’t need to be asking these questions.

Be kind - you never know what people are going through 💜

06/07/2023

When you have a “full time job” you get time off. You’re not physically on-the-job at all times, and there are mandatory breaks when you’re there.

Parenthood - especially motherhood - is different.

We’re told to be “supermoms” and spend all our time with our kid(s).

We’re told needing time away means we don’t love our kid(s).

We’re told our needs don’t matter as much as our kid’s needs.

We’re told we shouldn’t need breaks.

We’re told we should feel guilty for taking breaks.

This is a friendly reminder that:
✅your needs matter
✅ taking time away does not make you a bad mom
✅ everyone needs breaks
✅ rest is productive

If you’re struggling to take breaks for any reason, reaching-out for support can make a big difference 💜

05/25/2023

When we think of birth, we often expect that instant, magical moment when we look into our baby’s eyes and are immediately filled with love and joy and are bonded for life.

Unfortunately, that expectation doesn’t become a reality for many parents. Many things can cause a delay in bonding, and that delay can lead to increased guilt, anxiety, and depression symptoms.

Friendly reminder - it can take time to bond with your new baby and this doesn’t necessarily mean anything is “wrong”. Sometimes these things just take time.

With that said, not feeling bonded with your baby could be an indicator of a deeper issue like a mental health concern.

If you’re feeling like you’re struggling, please reach-out! Help is available 💜

To all the mothers who carry their children in their hearts not their arms, I see you. I see your child(ren). The bonds we form with our babies do not end just because the physical form is no longer present.

Today is Bereaved Mother’s Day. Reach-out to the mamas in your life. Say their child’s names. Nothing is more isolating than pretending a child/mom never existed 💜

05/02/2023

1 in 5 moms will experience one or more perinatal mood disorders.

The perinatal period spans from conception (pregnancy) through to the first year postpartum.

Perinatal mood disorders are the most common and the most under-diagnosed obstetric complication.

Many more moms will have symptoms of a mood concern though will never receive care or treatment due to societal stigma and shame.

It’s a big deal.

I’m 1 in 5.

My first birth was traumatic, and some of my deepest trauma sits in how I felt for that first year afterward.

Let’s raise awareness about this important issue 💜

If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach-out for support! Mental health matters.
