Feeling inspired, grateful, and refreshed after attending the Speech Cruise! Getting to meet and learn from wonderful Speech Language Pathologists from all around the world… while getting my tan/snorkel on in the Caribbean… was an incredible experience that I will never forget! I’m excited to put the new therapy strategies and approaches I learned into practice 😊🏝️⚓️

5 reasons why Speech and Occupational therapy in a Group setting can be beneficial for children:

- Kids can practice their skills in a realistic, social setting that may mimic their school, home, or community environment.

- Your child will have the opportunity interact with other kids while engaging in fun activities and potentially form new friendships!

- Your child has a chance to learn from their peers in the group, and the peers may learn from your child as well!

- Group Speech and Occupational therapy is often more affordable than individual therapy.

- Your child is still receiving guidance and support from registered professionals!

Meet our OT and SLP! 👋

Chris is the director of FUNctional mOTion 4 Kids in Edmonton. She is a Registered Occupational Therapist who has been practicing for over 20 years! Her pediatric experience lies in the areas of developmental delays, genetic and coordination disorders, and Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Lauren is the director of Little Spark Speech Services in Edmonton. She is a Registered Speech Language Pathologist with over 4 years of experience working with children of all ages with developmental delays, genetic syndromes, and ASD.

Chris and Lauren decided to collaborate to give children an opportunity to practice a combination of speech, language, and OT skills in a group setting. Thus, Say and Play Therapy was born! 😊

Both clinicians value the importance of a play-based therapy approach, functional goal setting, and collaborating with families and other health care professionals to help children achieve their goals.

Chris and Lauren are looking forward to running Say and Play Summer Camp this July and August! ☀️🕶️

Let’s talk about DRESS UP and how great this game can be for practicing a variety of speech and language skills! 👕👖👗

Playing dress-up is a fun way to work on using pronouns (he/she/they), first words (on/off, want, all done) expanding vocabulary (naming pieces of clothing, or occupations since the pictured dress-up is career themed!), following directions, answering “wh” questions (“Who wants to wear blue shorts?”, “What does a fireman do?”), and more!!

I picked up this magnetic Career Dress-Up set from Walmart a couple months ago and it is excellent!👌

We are thrilled that Spring is finally in the air! These have been 5 of our favorite books to read with our prek - early elementary kids so far this Spring:

- “We’re Going On a Nature Hunt” by Steve Metzger

- “Where is Maisy?” by Lucy Cousins

- “Up in the Garden and Down in the Dirt” by Kate Messner

- “The Very Busy Spider” by Eric Carle

- “Poke-a-Dot Old MacDonald’s Farm” from Melissa and Doug

Here are some ways you can support the autistic community this month (and always!) ♾️

1) Educate yourself about autism and how to be inclusive of autistic and other neurodiverse people. One of our favourite Instagram pages for autism info is !

2) Listen and show your support for autistic storytellers and content creators. Some of our favourites are and 😊

3) Use symbols such as the rainbow 🌈, infinity symbol ♾️, or the colour red to show your support, and NOT “light it up blue” or the puzzle piece. Blue is the colour of Autism Speaks, a corporation that uses their known platform to portray a stigma against autistic people. The puzzle piece symbol also has a negative association - autism is not a “puzzle” needing to be solved.

4) Donate to a charity such as or .autism.network that work to assist and advocate for autistic individuals ❤️
