Milk 'n Honey Lactation Services Help for Breastfeeding Families My name is Sherri McCrea and I am first of all a mom to 4 young men ranging from teen to young adults.

I breastfed all 4 of them but I sure wish I knew then what I know now. My hope with Milk 'n Honey is to help you know now what I now know šŸ˜‰

I have been a registered nurse since 1996 and have spent much of my career working in a family practice clinic where I spend a lot of my day doing well baby checks and helping young families stay healthy. I became a International Board Certified Lactation Co

nsultant (IBCLC) because becoming a mom is hard and I believe we need a village. Although breastfeeding is indeed natural, the process can be a complex endeavour. I love learning more about all things lactation and am committed to continuing my education. I have studied and continue to study the mechanics of the infant mouth, tongue and latch. Part of my assessments are a full oral exam. I offer everything in home assessments, prenatal teaching and advice on complementary feeding. I also offer 30 minute phone consults if you feel an in person assessment may not be necessary.

Let's discuss silver nursing cups. The benefits of using silver cups are due to its mechanical cover effect, and creating a moist hypoxic environment. Silver nursing cups have been embraced by women worldwide, and research has confirmed they speed the healing of ni**le wounds. One study found using silver cups during late pregnancy reduced ni**le trauma in that group. However, Lactation Consultants are seeing adverse effects from misuse of silver ni**le cups if use instructions are not followed. Eg. if the cups are filled with breast milk the ni**le and ar**la can become over-moist, causing maceration/breakdown of the skin. The makers recommend taking breaks from wearing them to reduce the risk of skin maceration.
The silver cups can also cause tissue compression around the mother’s ar**la, which occurs as the breast refills and enlarges prior to each breastfeed. The compression ring can lead to inflammation and blocked ducts in the surrounding zone, potentially resulting in mastitis. Avoiding tight fitting nursing bras and removing the cups an hour or so before breastfeeds can reduce the incidence of ar**la compression.
The maker’s advice about cleaning the cups frequently needs to be followed to ensure their safety. After each breastfeed the cups should be rinsed with warm water to remove milk residue. Apart from breastmilk rubbed gently into the ni**le, other ni**le skin treatments should not be used with the silver cups. A mild soap such as handwash liquid can be used to clean the cups. They should not be put in the dishwasher, scrubbed with scourers or exposed to bleach sterilisers. Tarnishing of the silver surface is normal and can be treated with baking soda and water, rinsed and gently dried.
A Board Certified Lactation Consultant can guide mothers to avoid ni**le trauma by teaching positioning and attachment techniques which suit their unique breast and baby.

Baby blues… on Bell Let’s Talk day I want to share my experience with postpartum depression. It’s not baby blues. It’s much different. It’s a hollow feeling that leaves you feeling hopeless. It’s also extreme worry that something might happen to you, your baby or someone else you love. It’s heavy. It’s exhausting. It’s very very real. It lasts for many weeks - not days. It’s consuming. It steals joy. I have always taught my kids that the hard, scary, difficult thoughts that can plague us lose their power when brought into the light. 6 months into my first bout I brought my deepest and darkest thoughts and worries into the light by telling people close to me and then by getting help. The combination of meds, prayer and bringing my irrational thoughts into the light carried me out of my PPD. It happened again after my next child but I knew what to do. So today on Bell Let’s Talk Day, I encourage mamas out there who might be silently suffering to bring it into the light. Blue can be beautiful when it’s a sunny day 🩵

A little knowledge can be a dangerous thing. This has never been so true as in the ongoing debate about foremilk and hindmilk and their impact on breastfeeding. The misunderstandings around these concepts have caused anxiety, upset, and even led to breastfeeding problems and premature weaning. The 2...

It’s very important to feed your baby but it’s also very important to be aware of and take care of mom’s mental health. Knowing the difference between what’s ā€œnormalā€ Baby Blues and what goes beyond in essential in being able to identify when you need to ask for help. Partners, this is important for you to know as well. šŸ’™šŸ©µšŸ¤šŸ’œšŸ©·šŸ’› As a mom and someone who has experienced Postpartum Depression and Postpartum Anxiety myself, consider me someone you can reach out to. We were never meant to walk this road alone…
