It’s perfect weather to be outside.🌞You get out there and then it hits you. Your eyes are red and itchy, your nose is stuffed, and you’re sneezing a lot.🤔 Being outside suddenly becomes exhausting and uncomfortable. These symptoms can last for weeks or sometimes even months. It can make it more difficult to concentrate, sleep or work. This is a common feeling for those who experience seasonal allergies.

When particles such as pollens, molds, or grasses are released into the air they can be inhaled. The immune system picks up these particles and tries to identify them. In healthy individuals, the body recognizes this as a non-threatening particle and gets rid of it. However, in a person with allergies, these little particles are identified as a threat and they set off a cascade of events.
Seasonal allergies can be managed naturopathically.

If you suffer from seasonal allergies and need help, book an appointment with Dr. Mason-Wood today by calling the clinic 587-521-3595📲💚

How Does Prolotherapy Work❓

Prolotherapy incorporates the use of a specifically formulated dextrose (sugar) solution injected into a ligament or tendon where it attaches to the bone. Your body’s initial reaction is to create inflammation, triggering its natural healing process by increasing the blood supply and flow of nutrients to the area. This stimulates the tissue to repair itself by deposition of collagen, the material that ligaments and tendons are made of.

The collagen then shrinks as it matures leading to ligament/tendon tightening and increased strength. The ligament and tendon tissue which forms as a result of Prolotherapy is thicker and stronger than normal tissue and can be up to 40% stronger in some cases.

Bidirectional: gut to brain 🧠 and brain to gut

Bidirectional: gut to brain 🧠 and brain to gut

The gut-brain axis integrates 4 primary streams of signals:

🧠 1. Neural Pathway
The vagus nerve and enteric nervous system (ENS) transmit afferent signals from the gut to the brain. Microbial metabolites and host-derived neurotransmitters (e.g., serotonin, dopamine, GABA) influence mood, cognition, and stress responses. Enteroendocrine and enterochromaffin cells release neuroactive compounds in response to microbial cues.

🧬 2. Endocrine Pathway
The gut microbiota modulates HPA axis activity through changes in gut barrier integrity, circulating metabolites, and stress hormones. Cortisol, released from the adrenal cortex, affects both systemic inflammation and brain function. Microbiota-regulated hormones such as GLP-1, CCK, and ghrelin further influence appetite, mood, and behavior.

🦠 3. Immune Pathway
Microbial antigens (PAMPs) and metabolites interact with intestinal immune cells (e.g., Th1, Th17, dendritic cells), influencing systemic and neuroinflammatory tone. Elevated cytokines like TNF-α, IL-1, and IL-6 have been linked to blood-brain barrier disruption, depression, and cognitive impairment.

🔁 4. Metabolic Pathway
The gut microbiota ferments dietary components (e.g., fiber, protein, bile acids) into signaling molecules including:

-SCFAs (butyrate, propionate)
-Secondary bile acids
-Branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs)

These metabolites affect energy regulation, neurotransmission, and epigenetic signaling within the CNS and peripheral tissues.

✨ Quote of the Week

“Your thoughts can plant seeds of self-doubt — like weeds that need to be pulled from the roots — otherwise they can take over and ruin the garden that is your mind.”
— Dr. Christina Bjorndal, ND

Not every thought you think is true.
Some are rooted in fear, past experiences, or old beliefs.
And if left unchallenged, they can quietly take over.
Here is the medicine:
You don’t have to believe every thought you think.
You can pause.
You can question it.
You can choose a thought that is in service of YOU. 🤍

1️⃣Deep Breathing – Your lungs are an important organ of detoxification, so deep breaths are a wonderful way to begin this process.
2️⃣Saunas – We store a lot of toxins in our fat, and one of the only ways to get them out is through sweating.
3️⃣Castor Oil Packs – Castor oil helps to stimulate the liver and get rid of toxins in the gut, along with improving skin quality and sleep.
4️⃣Exercise – Sluggish muscles and excess fat can store and create toxins from inactivity.
5️⃣Drink Water – Water is necessary for diluting and bringing waste to the kidneys to be filtered out as urine. If you don’t drink water, the toxins stay in your body and lead to fatigue, muscle pain and irritability.
6️⃣Lemon Juice – First thing in the morning, take the juice of one organic lemon and add it to some warm water to make a nice drink. This helps to clear away the mucus in your gut that has accumulated while sleeping and helps to kick start your liver for a good day of filtering.
7️⃣Dry Skin Brushing – Dry Skin Brushing involves using a dry, natural bristle, soft brush to brush your skin prior to bathing. This helps to clear toxins from the skin (the largest detoxifying organ of the body!
8️⃣ Eat Organic Foods – If you decrease the amounts of pesticides, heavy metals and pollutants that are going into your body, you will have less to worry about removing.
9️⃣Fresh Air – High levels of contaminants from the off-gassing of our houses can lead to higher levels of toxicity in our bodies. Try to open your windows as much as possible, and get outside for at least 20 minutes each day.
🔟Natural Products – Try to use organic, natural cosmetics, soaps and cleaning supplies. In this way, you will be helping the environment to detoxify as well as yourself.

Microplastics are not just detrimental to your health, but also the environment!

Microplastics are tiny but mighty in their impact, posing significant threat to ecosystems. Wildlife is directly impacted and can disrupt natural processes within the environment. Marine animals can mistake microplastics for food. Fish, turtles, and birds often ingest these particles. The coral reefs become damaged as microplastic particles can block sunlight and damage coral, affecting the entire reef ecosystem. Harmful chemicals are absorbed by these particles which in turn, attract and hold onto pollutants, making them even more toxic when ingested by animals. Soil health is also affected by microplastics as these particles alter soil structure and reduce its ability to retain water and nutrients.

Our ecosystems directly impact us, so it is important that we remain mindful of our environment and reduce plastic use as much as possible. Your body and the planet will thank you!💚

❓Did you know that chicken, pork loin chops and wild caught fish filets have the lowest levels of microplastics compared to other proteins? Fresh chicken breasts contain the lowest levels of microplastics among all proteins analyzed, averaging only 0.01 microplastics per gram. The study suggests this is because they are less processed and have fewer touchpoints with plastic materials during production.

Pork loin chops follow closely behind chicken breasts, these also showed very low microplastic concentrations, reinforcing the trend that minimally processed cuts of meat are the safer option.
While all seafood contains some level of microplastics, studies show that minimally processed options, such as wild-caught fish fillets, can have lower levels than highly processed products like fish sticks or breaded shrimp.
