➡️ This week's Vitality Alberta: Work Well article explores supporting men’s mental health in the workplace: https://ow.ly/7QGL50XmxHL

Many men suffer in silence, often facing pressure to “tough it out” while balancing work, family and personal challenges. In Canada, 75% of all suicides are among men (StatsCan, Movember), high-lighting the importance of support.

When men are supported in their mental health, everyone benefits — teams are stronger, families are healthier and stigma is reduced.

October is ADHD Awareness month—a time to learn, understand and support those living with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). At Alberta Blue Cross, we believe caring for your mental health starts with awareness and understanding.

Did you know, 50% of Canadian adults with ADHD are undiagnosed and there’s an average wait time of 6 months to get an ADHD diagnosis through the public health care system?

This month, we’re helping Albertans access credible ADHD information and expert-led resources through Frida, a leading online ADHD clinic.

More Canadians over 65 are choosing to stay in the workforce, and their knowledge and leadership are invaluable. Alberta employers are finding ways to support this group’s wellness while making the most of their experience.

From flexible scheduling and wellness benefits that meet changing needs, to creating mentorship programs that connect generations, workplaces are seeing the value in keeping senior talent engaged and supported.

When older employees are included in wellness strategies and given opportunities to share their skills, everyone benefits — teams grow stronger, collaboration improves and knowledge is passed on.

📣 How is your workplace tapping into the experience of senior employees? Share your thoughts in the comments.

👥 Let’s talk about supporting every stage of a career

This week in our Workplace Wellness series with Postmedia, we are focusing on age-inclusive wellness and how Alberta employers are recognizing the value of their experienced team members.

From flexible hours to long-term wellness planning, more workplaces are tailoring benefits to meet the needs of employees in the second and third act of their careers. That might mean adjusting schedules for caregiving, offering retirement planning resources or creating health and wellness programs that work for different physical needs.

When workplaces support employees at every stage of life, they keep valuable knowledge in the business, improve engagement and build stronger teams.

📣 What does age-inclusive wellness look like in your workplace? Share your thoughts in the comments.

Our Story

More than 60 years ago, a small blue cross became the symbol of a bold new movement to help Albertans struggling to pay for medical care. Alberta Blue Cross began as company dedicated to helping people pay their hospital bills in an era when universal health care didn't exist.

Alberta hospitals were behind the formation of the Alberta Blue Cross Plan in 1948. Under an Act of the Alberta Legislature, the Associated Hospitals of Alberta (AHA) was incorporated and permitted to establish a voluntary, pre-paid, not-for-profit Blue Cross plan. The Plan essentially served as an extension of Alberta's hospital sector, offering a province-wide hospital care plan for working Albertans. It gave patients affordable coverage for hospital services. At the same time, Alberta hospitals gained greater financial security because the Plan paid patient bills.

Today, we deliver a broad range of health benefit programs and services across Alberta. We’ve made a commitment to be present in the lives and communities we serve and to support and promote health and wellness across them. Our vision is to play a larger role with our customers, providing them with a lifetime of benefits.
