Motivation Monday:
Did you know doing a plank can burn 2-5 calories a minute? It is a great exercise that engages multiple muscles, helps improve posture, and improves your back and core strength.

How to plank: try to keep your shoulders back and back straight. You can start on your elbows and knees and progress to hands and toes as you get stronger. Beginners should aim for 10 seconds, the average athlete for 30 seconds, and the seasoned athlete for 1 minute. You can do 2-3 sets each day. Give it a try!

We now offer Manual Osteopathy!

Manual osteopaths assess and treat the body’s structures and rhythms using a gentle, hands-on approach. This fundamental technique is called osteopathic palpation. Manual osteopaths develop a very sensitive sense of touch to master osteopathic palpation. By ‘listening’ to the body, palpation identifies issues such as restriction, congestion, dehydration, scarring, and stiffness, while restoring proper function to bones, muscles, fluids, and organs.

What are the risks of cortisone injections?

Cortisone injections have long been an option for rotator cuff tendonitis, however a new study by Lin et al, 2022, showed a 7.44% increased risk for developing rotator cuff tears after receiving an injection. The average time for developing a tear was 39 months, so the risks are present even years after getting an injection.

All this to say, please don’t jump to choosing to get a cortisone injection for your shoulder pain before trying physiotherapy!

We’d like to introduce Daniel, the newest physiotherapist to join our team! Some of you may recognize him from when he worked at our clinic as a PT Assistant. He completed his PT Assistant program in the States and has now received his Masters of Physical Therapy from the U of A.

Daniel’s background in track and field helps him truly understand the entire recovery process from acute injury to return to competitive sport. He is thorough and attentive to movement patterns, which will help ensure a full recovery to all activities.

Daniel is working Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons/evenings. Give us a call to book an appointment.

We are now offering women’s pelvic health treatments at our clinic.

Pelvic floor physiotherapy can help manage symptoms related to urinary or f***l incontinence, as well as pelvic organ prolapse. These symptoms can have significant impacts on function and quality of life and can arise due to pelvic floor muscle weakness, tightness or difficulty coordinating muscle contraction and relaxation. Pelvic floor physical therapy may involve external and internal examination of the pelvic floor muscles to determine the cause of symptoms and appropriate treatment.

Our physiotherapist Julianna Hayashi is trained to treat pelvic health concerns including:
• Stress urinary incontinence – leaking urine with exercise (e.g. running, jumping, weight lifting), coughing, sneezing, or laughing
• Urge urinary incontinence – sudden, strong and/or frequent urge to urinate, with or without leakage
• Constipation or f***l incontinence
• Pelvic organ prolapse (prolapse of bladder, uterus, or re**um)

Give us a call to book or if you would like more information.

Did you know: the lower the band placement, the more activation you will get from your glute muscles?

Next time, try the mini band around your feet and try to side step, monster walk, or squat to encourage your glutes to fire.

Important update! As of November 6, you will be able to get referred for an x-ray or MSK ultrasound again from our clinic. We have two qualified physiotherapists who can write up a requisition for you.
This is welcome news, as it will save you from an extra trip to see your doctor, and will help cut costs to our medical system. Next time, you can make us your first stop post injury!
