Here are just a few of the incredibly moving art pieces that were created this week as part of our Canadian Fertility Awareness Week (CFAW 2024) Expressive Arts Workshop.

Participants of this workshop created unique art pieces representing their own Creative Journey, which will now become part of a mosaic mural representing a collective message of resilience: (the theme for CFAW 2024).

CFAW returns April 21-27, 2024 and and are proud to host a series of meaningful local events to unite the community as “One Voice” —this year’s CFAW theme.

CFAW Expressive Arts Workshop
Wednesday, April 24 - 6:30-8:30 p.m.
$40 per person - 100% proceeds to support ’s advocacy for fertility patients

Join us for an experiential workshop using expressive arts and mindfulness to explore your fertility journey and build resilience through safe and creative expression. 

Each participant will create a unique art piece, representing their own Creative Journey, which will become part of a mosaic mural representing a collective message of resilience: One Voice. 

This ‘One Voice’ mural will be exhibited at Alberta Reproductive Centre for 3 months*, after which participants are invited to take their pieces home. (*Please note that participant confidentiality will be honoured.)

Green smoothies can lead to many health benefits, including: improved digestion, increased dietary fiber, increased chlorophyll-rich blood-building properties, decreased inflammation, gentle detoxification, and more energy.

Fill the blender with variations of the following ingredients:

2 cups filtered water
a bunch of kale
a bunch of spinach
½ a peach
½ a banana
a handful of blueberries

Option to add a protein powder, like Vital Proteins Collagen Powder for a solid 20 grams of protein to start your day.

You could also add a healthy source of fat like flax oil or coconut oil.

Music therapy can be defined as "the use of music in the treatment or reduction of health problems through its beneficial effects or as a set of techniques used by sound for diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive purposes."

But did you know that it can help bring about relaxation and improve mental health before, during, and after pregnancy?

Music therapy is often used in states of stress, fatigue, and sleep disturbances (i.e. common symptoms related to pregnancy).

Ways to use music therapy are
1) in an active way, by playing instruments, singing, or moving/dancing to music, or
2) in a passive way, by listening to or talking about music.

Chocolate Mousse Recipe

We used a low glycemic sweetener to stabilize blood sugar levels, which is important for people in general, but even more so during conception and pregnancy. Dark chocolate has numerous health benefits including its arginine content, which encourages blood flow to the uterus and ovaries for fertility. Tofu is a healthful alternative to whipping cream and eggs and it (along with the avocado) preserves the creamy texture of this delicious mousse.

Preparation time: 5 to 10 minutes
Serves 4 to 6

10 ounces dark chocolate, melted
1 package silken tofu (optional: 1/2 an avocado)
2 to 4 tablespoons agave syrup
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
2 teaspoon vanilla extract

In a blender or food processor, puree tofu and optional avocado, with agave, vanilla and cinnamon until perfectly smooth. Add melted chocolate and mix until fully combined.

Pour mixture in a bowl, and let sit in the fridge for at least 4 hours.

What us folic acid and why is it so important?

Folic acid is a B vitamin. Having enough folic acid in your body at least 1 month before and during pregnancy can help prevent major birth defects of the developing baby’s brain and spine (anencephaly and spina bifida). The urges all people who can become pregnant to get 400 micrograms (mcg) of folic acid each day, from fortified foods or supplements, or a combination of the two, in addition to a varied diet rich in folate.

We also recommend checking the format of the folic acid in your supplements. Finding a supplement with MTHF/ methylated-folate (the active form of folic acid) can also important.

Many people taking folic acid have gene variants for the gene that encodes for the enzyme that converts folic acid into this active form. This percentage is postulated to be even higher in people who present with fertility issues.

In the rush of the day, let's take a mindful pause with a simple breathing exercise. 🌿💙

Mindful Breathing Exercise:
Find a quiet space and sit comfortably.
Inhale deeply through your nose for a count of four.
Hold your breath for a count of four.
Exhale slowly and completely for a count of four.
Repeat this cycle several times.

Why Mindful Breathing?
🌬️ Reduces stress and anxiety by engaging the parasympathetic nervous system.
🌬️ Enhances focus and concentration.
🌬️ Promotes a sense of calm and balance.

As you breathe, let go of tension. Feel the present moment, the rise and fall of your breath.

In 2023, a study came out covering maternal gut microbiome and its role in maternal and infant health.

Some important points to note:
✔️The maternal gut microbiome is influenced by pregnancy.
✔️Prepregnancy BMI, gut diseases, and environment affect maternal gut microbiome.
✔️During pregnancy, diet, medications, weight gain, smoking, and parity shape the gut microbiome.
✔️Maternal gut microbiome links to complications like gestational diabetes and preeclampsia.

More research is needed in this area to explore best practices to optimize gut microbiome for pregnancy, but in the meantime, it is good to focus on good health. Taking care of good health is always a good idea, but especially so, when preparing to conceive.

Tips on building good health:
🥑Focus on whole, plant-based foods
☣️Remove toxins from the environment (e.g. harmful cleaning products)
🏋‍♀️Maintain a healthy weight
🚭Avoid smoking
😌Reduce stress
