Letter of Understanding #18

The benefit changes listed in Letter of Understanding #18 RE: Prepaid Benefits are effective on the first day of the month following 90 days from the date of ratification – this would be August 1, 2025.
 
These include changes to coverage for massage therapy and diabetic supplies.
 
As part of the new Provincial Collective Agreement, AHS, Recovery Alberta, Primary Care Alberta and Covenant Health have agreed to a 90-day open period for enrolment for employees who have previously opted to not enrol in the benefit program.
 
Most employers are still confirming their process and timelines for the open period. UNA will share more information when the union receives it.

The new agreement includes:
▪︎An immediate pay increase of up to 15 per cent
▪︎An overall increase of approximately 20 per cent for all affected members
▪︎Annual pay increases of 3 per cent in each year of the new agreement
▪︎A revised annual pay grid with pay increases of 4 per cent between each step
▪︎Pay increases retroactive to April 1, 2025
▪︎Significant monetary increases for on-call, charge pay, and other premiums
▪︎Full reimbursement of professional registrations and liability fees
▪︎New measures to ensure safe staffing
▪︎A commitment by the province to provide presumptive coverage for PTSD and psychological injuries
▪︎Job security during health care restructuring
▪︎Assistance for rural health care staffing

This round of negotiations was about Respect, Retention and Recruitment,” said UNA President Heather Smith. “When UNA members voted against ratifying a settlement that had been recommended by a Mediator last October, they spoke clearly, and we listened. The result was the agreement ratified yesterday.”

Smith described the new agreement – which retroactively takes effect from March 31, 2024, and will expire on April 1, 2028 – as “a meaningful step toward the recognition and respect Alberta’s nurses deserve and have been fighting for.”

Delegates to the United Nurses of Alberta Reporting Meeting on Tuesday voted overwhelmingly to recommend ratification of a Tentative Agreement by eligible members of all affected locals.

A ratification vote by UNA members will be held on Wednesday, April 2, 2025. The results will be shared on Thursday, April 3, 2025.

The four-year collective agreement was considered in detail by more than 500 delegates from all affected UNA locals at the day-long online meeting.

The Tentative Agreement applies to more than 33,000 Registered Nurses and Registered Psychiatric Nurses employed by Alberta Health Services, Recovery Alberta, Primary Care Alberta, Covenant Health, Lamont Health Care Centre, and The Bethany Group (Camrose).  

Ratification Vote Information

When to vote: The vote will be held from 00:01 to 23:59 on Wednesday, April 2, 2025.

How to vote: UNA members who have provided a personal or .ca email address will receive an email link from Election Buddy. Emails will not be sent to Employer email addresses. Whether or not you receive an email, you can go to vote.una.ca. and select your UNA Local, then enter your Member ID and PIN from your membership card in order to vote. Members should watch their email inboxes for an electronic copy of their membership card.

When will we know the results? The results will be shared on Thursday, April 3, 2025. The Tentative Agreement must be approved by a majority of UNA members and a majority of UNA Locals voting.

United Nurses of Alberta will hold
two online information sessions for members on the
Local Authorities Pension Plan (LAPP) on Tuesday,
April 15, from 12 noon to 1:30 p.m, and from 6 p.m, to 7:30 p.m.

The virtual seminars by UNA Labour Relations
Officers Richard West and Carolyn 0lson will be
delivered via Zoom, They will include a description of the LAPP, and information on its value, participation rules, contributions, pension calculation, and retirement process.

In addition, the sessions will cover LAPP Discbility
and Canada Pension Plcn Disability, the 2% matching supplement RRSP or TFSA provision in UNA's Provincial Collective Agreement, and
post-retirement benefit plans.

The Reporting Meeting
A virtual Reporting Meeting of Local representatives will be held on March 25, at which time the UNA Negotiating Committee will recommend that a ratification vote be held on April 2. UNA’s Negotiating Committee recommends ratification of the Tentative Agreement.

What is the process for the ratification vote on the Tentative Agreement?
