So many of the kids we see have sensory sensitivities and travelling can be a difficult and overwhelming experience. So great to see the airport recognizing this as well, and providing some relief with the help of Autism Edmonton!

Fabulous special edition of "Very Well" magazine this month! Focusing primarily on helping us understand autism, this edition does a fantastic job of explaining neurodivergence and the various diagnoses that fall under this umbrella. It also aims to help us understand the language of neurodivergence, the diagnostic process, types of symptom treatments when needed, and overall, to raise awareness, foster acceptance, and celebrate autistic individuals.

I’m also proud to say that we see and nurture this same awareness, acceptance, and growing celebration in our children’s group programs!

With the wide range of neurodivergence (including various diagnoses), as well as participants with no diagnosis or those who might be considered neurotypical, I really love when I see group members feeling comfortable enough to share their experiences, diagnoses, and more. It’s so wonderful to see faces light up when they realize someone else has the same diagnosis or similar life experiences—creating a world of sensitivity, acceptance, and safety in our neurodiverse groups.

So lovely to see “The Stimming Pool” film tonight sponsored by Edmonton with a few of my colleagues from our team. This artistic film, created by people with autism, did a fabulous job showing what it’s like for some people with neurodivergence, managing in their daily lives. Particularly sensory overload and the regulating effects of stimming, as well as the large variety of coping strategies that different people use. I really loved to see the beautiful interaction between one young man with a super keen interest in film, and his father.

We also really enjoyed the panel discussion afterwards, where people shared their experiences as people with autism or having a loved one with autism.

Greater understanding leads to greater acceptance and greater appreciation!

Autism Acceptance is important for several reasons. It represents a shift in perspective from focusing on "awareness" to embracing and understanding the diversity of individuals on the autism spectrum.

Acceptance challenges stereotype, reduces stigma, and empowers individuals to express themselves confidently.

Let's celebrate neurodiversity and work towards a society that appreciates everyone's uniqueness this World Autism Acceptance Day.
