That was during a time of my life when I was trying every habit hack possible to keep me motivated. ​​​​​​​​
​​​​​​​​
That mindset was coming from a place of perfection. I thought the only way to be healthy was if I ate β€œclean” and exercised every day, no matter how my body was feeling. TBH my diet and exercise regimen gave me a sense of pride. ​​​​​​​​
​​​​​​​​
But where did this pride come from? ​​​​​​​​
​​​​​​​​
It was coming from a sense of belonging. Because when I behave and look the part that society expects women to, then I β€˜belong’. ​​​​​​​​

The reality though, is you’re going to 'miss a Monday,' or any other day of the week for that matter. And when you do, the last thing you need is to feel guilt for listening to your body. ​​​​​​​​

Getting to a place where I can honor my body and embrace the nuances of health required questioning the habits that I once used thinking they were in my best interest, but were actually disordered behaviors. ​​​​​​​​

It required me to develop unconditional acceptance for myself so that I could live doing the things that make me healthy and happy, believing wholeheartedly that the sense of belonging doesn’t come from my body shape, the food on my plate or the state of my health. ​​​​​​​​

If you're in the process of healing your relationship with food and still feel shame or guilt when you eat certain things, know you aren't alone.

Or perhaps you question if it’s really possible to allow yourself to eat foods that you currently don’t have any control over.

It's a long process of undoing diet culture messages but it is possible to get to a point where food is no longer the enemy.

The live I did today had some really great tips on how to give yourself unconditional permission to eat all foods… but somehow the sound was removed once I uploaded it to my feed. So I’m going to go live again tomorrow to help you heal your relationship with your fear foods.

Giving yourself unconditional permission to eat all foods is one of the most liberating actions you can do when you are exiting the world of diet culture... but it can also feel scary af.

This principle of Intuitive Eating also happens to be one that gets taken out of context all of the time.

Why?

Well there's a few reasons:
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
1. Our current diet and wellness industry teach you that you can't trust your body to know what and how much to eat and it's best if you follow their advice = an opportunity for them to make a buttload of money (the diet and wellness industry is currently worth 733.1 billion U.S).

2. There is a fear that if we allow ourselves to eat all foods we will gain weight and because of society's current weight stigmas, this is a terrifying thought for many.

3. We have been taught to label food as healthy and unhealthy, while attaching moral value to what we choose to feed our bodies with.

4. Lastly, there are too many people who sell β€œhealthy lifestyle and nutrition” programs that claim there are no β€œoff-limit foods” but are still operating off of diet rules.

My heart breaks for those who have been affected by the manipulation of Noom.

For those who felt so depleted by all the previous attempts at weight loss and saw an ad for a non-diet approach that promises to be "the one" that works... so they clicked.

Only to find themselves on yet another diet.

And the 99.6 percent of users who quit the app before six months, left feeling like they were the problem.

I promise it's not your fault.

If you still hold onto a hope that weight loss is the ticket to your happiness, I hear you. I see you.

I apologize on behalf of all the coaches, programs, and practitioners who are profiting off of this hope.

I'm here to remind you that your body does not need to look a certain way to be healthy or worthy.

I'm here when you're ready to find health, happiness, and confidence without chasing weight loss, without exercising as punishment and restrictive behaviours around food.

Unpopular opinion...I just get so fired up when I read fellow nutritionists' posts about their programs being anti-diet, yet they are sharing testimonials that celebrate weight loss.

Or they talk about intuitive eating and ditching diet culture but then offer you a program that focuses on weight loss by justifying that it's not a quick fix program and every person has a choice to lose weight if they want.

Yes, that’s 100% true. It's a person's prerogative to attempt weight loss (and should never be shamed for doing so) but as anti-diet and intuitive eating coaches, the basis of our work is educating you why intentional weight loss doesn't work and showing you a way to find true confidence in your body and how to make peace with food. If you support your client in focusing on weight loss, no matter how well-intended you are, that's a diet.

By continuing to refer to your program as non-diet or intuitive eating, it's confusing and not helping the fight against diet culture.

The other reason I get fired up is that I know how difficult it can be to let go of the hope of weight loss. So many of my clients, myself included, at one point secretly hoped intuitive eating would help them lose weight. This hope of weight loss was coming from our internalized fat-phobia. If someone is really trying to let go of that hope and reads your post of you celebrating your client's weight loss while supposedly ditching diet culture, that perpetuates fat-phobia.

One more thing. Intuitive eating is not anti-weight loss. It's anti-INTENTIONAL weight loss. Some people lose weight. Some gain. Some stay the same. The goal is body neutrality so you can remove ALL worth associated with weight.
