Chef Doreen Prei, the Culinary Manager at Glenora Park, recently achieved a major win by taking first place in the regional qualifier for the Canadian Culinary Championships. Known for her innovative approach and deep respect for local ingredients, Doreen impressed the judges with a dish comprised of multiple seafood components that reminded her of her home near the Baltic Sea.
She later recreated her winning dish for residents and team members at Glenora Park, sharing a taste of her success with those who have supported her journey. “It was beautiful to bring a part of the competition here,” she said, “and I’m so grateful for the pride they’ve shown in me.”
Doreen, a Michelin-star-trained chef, spent much of her life in Europe before making Canada her home. Entering the retirement living sector in early 2023, she felt drawn to work with seniors in the Edmonton community. Though she once considered a career in social work, her passion for cooking won out. “I wanted to work somewhere that truly aligned with my values,” she explained. “I have the privilege of working with seniors, building trust, and creating memorable dining experiences in their golden years.”
Since joining the Glenora Park team, Doreen has gone above and beyond to connect with residents. When a few residents expressed dissatisfaction with the potato salad on the menu, she organized a fun potato salad cook-off. Six residents crafted their unique recipes, and everyone, including family members, voted for their favorite. In the end, a resident’s homestyle potato salad won—and it’s now the beloved choice served in the dining room.
Doreen’s mission is to transform how people view the culinary experience in retirement living. She believes it’s about enhancing the resident experience, finding those small details that make a difference.
In January, Doreen will join nine other regional winning chefs in Ottawa to compete in the Canadian Culinary Championships finals for the title of Canada’s top chef! Her Cogir family will be cheering her on every step of the way.
Congratulations, Doreen!
