Do Yellow Lenses Improve Nighttime Vision?
No, yellow lenses do not improve nighttime vision.
Our eyes function the best when we allow as much light in as they can tolerate. Yellow lenses can block 20% or more of incoming light from entering your eye which would lead to poorer low light vision.
What does this mean for nighttime driving? What can you do to improve your nighttime vision?
1) Keep on top of getting your eyes checked regularly. Even a small change in your prescription can make nighttime vision clearer.
2) Choose clear lenses with an anti-reflection coating. Anti-reflection coatings allow 99% of light to pass through the lenses cleanly. This helps reduce glare from oncoming headlights and streetlights. Lenses without anti-reflection coatings only allow 75% of light to pass through.
3) Make sure your glasses are clean and your anti-reflection coating is in good condition.
4) Ensure your windshield is crack and chip free.
5) Keep your windshield clean, inside and out. When was the last time you cleaned the inside of your windshield? You might be surprised at how dirty it is!
What are yellow lenses good for?
1) They are typically used as a sporting lens colour. For example, they can help increase contrast and make it easier to spot flying objects in the sky.
2) Yellow neutralizes blue. If you’re especially sensitive to blue light, yellow lenses may help.
