I can’t believe I’m saying this, but Wild Yarrow as we know it is officially coming to an end. 🥲

Wild Yarrow is 8.5 years old now, can you believe it?! It’s with mixed emotions that I’m closing this chapter of my business (and life!) to head into the next.

For the past 2 years, I’ve had the pleasure of being the Dean of the School of Western Herbal Medicine for Pacific Rim College, as well as an instructor, and will continue to focus my energy there while the next steps reveal themselves.

I don’t have all the answers yet (hopefully they’re on their way...come on universe!✨), but for now, it’s become clear that I want to focus on creating more balance in my life so that I can show up as the best version of myself for my daughter, loved ones and myself.

I’ve been so blessed to have each and every one of you in my life, supporting me and contributing to my business in some way. 🙏

I’ll be closing this account in about a week, and if you’d like to remain connected, you can find me at my personal instagram account.

But as a celebration to Wild Yarrow, I created a trip down memory lane newsletter- If you’d care to join me on that journey, click this link to see a little hommage to Wild Yarrow over the years 🥰💕

And so, my dearest, it is with so much gratitude in my heart, and faith in my being that life will find a way that I say: THANK YOU. 🙏 May you be truly well in your mind, body and spirit, and may our paths cross again soon! 💗🌿

Happy Birthday Baby girl!!!! My sweet sweet Phénix turns 2 today...in Mexico!

We've been here for 2 weeks with some of my best buds (head home tomorrow) & it's been a bit of radio silence on my end because I wanted to unplug from tech for our trip (plus the wifi was so choppy!).

I feel so blessed to have seen my sweet little babe adapt in a new country, be so kind to people and animals (she's a pro at saying "Ola" and "muchas gracias" and always made sure the animals had love and water) and seeing her be such a trooper, always down for an adventure makes her mama SO fricken proud.

Bonne Fête Phénix d'amour, maman t'adore!! ❤️🥰🎉

January can be a tough time of year for all of us. It’s cold and dark, and it can feel a little bleak at times. ❄️

Some of us even experience SADs (Seasonal Affective Disorder), which makes the winter get even darker in our psyches and can be super tough.

I'm sharing 5 herbs that are known as thymoleptics in the herbal world (a fancy word that means "to lift depression and brighten the spirits") to help you beat the January blues.

Have you ever tried these herbs and did they help?

Having a healthy relationship with the digital world doesn't necessarily mean switching off from social media for 24-48 hours. I mean, for some people, that is just not possible. But what is possible is carving out some time in your day to reset, rejuvenate and breath.

Some useful ways to help you achieve this are as follows:

🌞 Set Boundaries: create some firm boundaries with social media, emails and screens. This could look like putting your phone in a drawer after 8pm or putting it on dnd while you prep and eat dinner.

🌞 Detoxes: One weekend you could choose arts of craft activities or physical activities that help you build connections away from the screen.

🌞 Notifications: Turn off those pesky notifications and check your phone when you are ready, not when you are told to.

🌞 Intention: It is easy to find yourself passively scrolling on Instagram and while I think you can find beautiful, pleasurable and engaging content here... it is important to absorb it consciously. Scroll with intention and know when it is time to log off.

How do you practise a healthy relationship in these modern times?

A cold January + Sunday self-care = Epsom salt bath 🛀🏻
My most loved way to relieve stress in by having a warm, Epsom salt bath (although these days my baths are mostly with my toddler because she DEMANDS I get in with her. My girl is really clear on what she wants in life, I tell ya 🤣).

But for real, the practice of bathing is extremely calming to our body and mind. Hot water helps to soften and relax our muscles. Epsom salts are rich in magnesium, a mineral that eases anxiety and promotes gentle detoxification. It also helps to encourage a restful sleep.

So, go on, run yourself a soothing bath this weekend, and don't forget the candles! (For optimal relaxation, maybe do it minus the toddler too lol).

Did you know the body can’t make Omega 3? Omega 3’s are essentially fatty acids, meaning they’re essential for supporting the body, and the only way to get them is through food.

Our ratio of omega 3 to 6 tends to be WAY off as well. Omega 6's are present in all of the vegetable oils (which tend to be in everything), so the ratio of omega 3 to 6 can be as high as 1:20, when we want to be more like 1:1. Eeesh! Research has shown that a ratio of 1:3 can suppress certain diseases and significantly reduces systemic inflammation.

Moral of the story- the lower the ratio, the better.

Omega-3s are found naturally in certain whole foods and are also being added to some fortified foods. You can get adequate amounts of omega-3s by eating a variety of foods, including the following:

Fish and other seafood 🐟
Nuts and seeds 🥜
Soybeans 🍜
Seaweed and algae 🍣

So what benefits do Omega 3's have in the body? Good question. They help to prevent cardiovascular disease, lower blood pressure, decrease inflammation, support brain health, lubricate the bowel and moisten dry eyes & skin.

So, next time you are meal planning... be sure to include some foods that are rich in these incredibly healthful fats!

I don't know who needs to hear this right now, but wellness is anything that makes you feel deeply nourished on a physical, mental and spiritual level. And if anything you do in the name of "health and wellness" starts to suck your life energy or drain you- It is no longer serving you. (Yup, even if what you are doing is considered healthy). 💗

Exercise is a prime example of this- if you feel anxious or stressed to fit exercise into your routine, and you hate it the whole time you're doing it, then it's counterproductive. Stress is so taxing for the body or mind. This doesn't mean quit exercising or eating well! No, my friends. This is where one of my most loved tools come in, and that tool is INTUITION.

Intuition is not something we generally rely on much these days. But feeling into your body and checking in with yourself will keep you knowing what is supportive to you, and what you need to let go of.

And guess what? Your intuition is never wrong. It will guide you to practices that feel good, supportive and nourishing, every time. Maybe that HIIT program is too hard on your joints, or is too intense for your adrenals because you're going through burnout (and yin yoga or a long walk outside would be better suited to you). 🧘🏻‍♂️

What has your intuition been telling you lately?

The importance of rest in our everyday life is heavily overlooked. In fact we need different types of rest everyday.

🤟🏻 Mental rest - This looks like moments of silence. Switching off completely. Practising stillness and being with our own thoughts.

📱 Technology rest - This looks like closing the laptop, turning off the tv and leaving your phone in a drawer.

🌳 Nature rest - Wild swimming, a stroll in the park, laying in grass, breathing fresh winter air, walking barefoot on the sand.

🧘🏻 Physical rest - prioritising sleep by going to bed earlier, sleeping in later and taking naps.

Take some time to observe and rest... your mind, body and spirit will thank you for it later. What area of rest have you been lacking in lately?

Our Story

Why Wild Yarrow as the name?

As Bree was studying, she realized that yarrow is a plant that speaks so perfectly to the intelligence of plants. Yarrow can stop bleeding almost instantly if you have a cut or nose bleed, but it can also bring on bleeding if a women’s mentrual cycle is late. It’s the perfect example or how plants seem to interact with human physiology and act in the exact way the body needs, depending on what imbalance is taking place.

Yarrow also has really interesting mythology associated with it. It’s latin name is “Achillea millefolium,” which is said to be named after the Greek hero Achilles, whose only weekness was his heel (hence, Achilles heel). He used it to heal his soldiers wounds in the battlefield. Historically, it has been called “Soldier’s Woundwort” and “Carpenter’s Weed,” and was used during World War I and the American Civil War specifically to stop bleeding and disinfect wounds.

Chiron, the wise and healing centaur in Greek mythology taught Achilles amoung others how to use medicinal herbs, including yarrow. Chiron eventually got injured by Hercules and the wound would not heal. Thus, he embodies “the wounded healer” achetype. This is such an important achetype because it reminds us that our wounds are what propel us towards growth, personal evolution and inevitably makes us more compassionate to those we help. We all have our “weaknesses and wounds”, like Achilles and Chiron. It’s about embracing those difficult life experiences to create understanding and healing for ourselves and those we help.
