Many people believe that when they are told to be strong, that this means they are supposed to hold their feelings inside, which results in them shutting down. I personally feel it is very strong to be honest about your emotions, and to let them out, but since words are easily misinterpreted, these alternates may be more helpful.

I often have clients who worry that if they drop their people pleasing behaviors, they will no longer be caring and kind towards others. Looking after yourself doesn't mean you are selfish! See below for ways to be kind and giving, without losing yourself and while having healthy boundaries.

Oftentimes, anxiety or mood issues occur when we let our minds jump too far ahead. Scaling back to focus only on what needs to be done next - whether that is dealing with one task at a time or one day at a time - can help with your stress level and the sense that you really can get through this.

Keeping a gratitude journal (writing down five things at the end of each day that you are grateful for) can help to shift from a negative mindset to a positive one, as there is always something to be grateful for, even on the worst days. Once you start looking for things to be grateful for, you start to see the positive, such as the flower amongst the weeds.

We all have a lot of stressors and worries during this difficult time, which takes up much more energy and more internal resources than you may realize. This is the time to be gentle and kind with yourself, and do whatever you need to get through it all, day by day.

I’m the perfect case study for why self-isolation based on societal demand makes all the difference between thriving vs. surviving.

With all the chaos in the world right now, we are faced with some stressful and trying times. My office is still open to see clients, and I want to reassure you that we are following the appropriate safety and prevention policies, such as disinfecting between clients and rescheduling anyone who has any signs or symptoms of illness. I am also waiving my late cancellation fee, in order to encourage those who are ill to call or email in to reschedule their appointments. In addition, I am currently offering some telepsychology options (counselling via phone or video) to meet the needs of my clients while they are ill or social distancing. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns - stay safe and healthy!
