Did you know...

After a gestational diabetes (GDM) diagnosis, Diabetes Canada recommends breast/chest feeding for a minimum of 4 months to reduce the risk of neonatal hypoglycemia, childhood obesity, and diabetes in the child.

But this month is about the Mamas!!

Did you know that breast/ chest feeding in people diagnosed with GDM is helpful for them too!

Ziegler's group found that nursing after a GDM diagnosis reduced the median time to a type 2 diabetes diagnosis from 2.3 to 12.3 years!

Please note:
Breast/ chest feeding is not always possible and it is rarely easy. This post is meant for information purposes only and is not intended any way to shame those who choose not to or cannot breast/ chest feed.

You’re doing better than you think 💛

September 12 is National Day of Encouragement… but honestly, we think it’s always a good time for a little encouragement.

So here’s a reminder, just for you:
🌿 Making healthy changes is hard.
🌿 Staying consistent is hard.
🌿 Prioritizing yourself is hard, especially when you're used to putting everyone else first.

✨ But hard doesn’t mean impossible.
And it definitely doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong.

💛 If you’ve made it to one appointment, taken one deep breath, prepped one meal, or even just thought about changing something for your health, we see you.

That counts!

You’re showing up, learning, adjusting, and trying, and that is the real work.
Rarely do we find our stride after a single attempt, if you didn't get it right the first time, welcome to the team. Making change requires perseverance NOT perfection.

Today, we encourage you to:
💐 Celebrate even the smallest win
💐 Offer yourself some compassion
💐 Remember that healing is not linear

✨ You don’t have to be perfect. You just have to keep going.
Tell us, what’s one small change you’re proud of this month?
💬 Drop it in the comments so we can cheer you on 💛

Today we honour World Su***de Prevention Day (September 10), a day dedicated to shifting the conversation around su***de from silence and stigma to hope, understanding, and prevention.

The theme this year from the Canadian Association for Su***de Prevention is, “Changing the Narrative on Su***de”, invites us to reframe not just how we talk about su***de, but why we speak up in the first place.

When conversations include stories of resilience, compassionate care, and recovery, they become powerful tools for healing.

In this carousel, we break down:
👉 Global data and facts (without overwhelming)
👉 The importance of empathetic language & respectful dialogue
👉 IS PATH WARM: A helpful tool for recognizing warning signs
👉 Ways you can help both friends and yourself
👉 The vital role of community-based, trauma‑informed care

Today, we choose connection over shame. Listening over judgment. Hope over silence.

Let’s commit to sharing stories of survival and support, because su***de prevention is everybody’s business.

💬 We’d love to hear from you:
What does hope or support feel like in your community?

Ok, You have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes... now what??

👆 First, don't panic!!

You did the right thing by screening for this condition.

There is plenty you can do to help protect both your health and your babies health.

Here are some things you can do:
✔️ Speak to your MD and your ND about medications and supplements that might be appropriate for you.

✔️ If you are able breastfeed/ chestfeed your baby.
▪Breastfeeding for a minimum of 4 months helps to decrease the risk of hypoglycemia in your newborn, obesity in childhood and diabetes for both you and your baby later in life. (Diabetes Canada)
▪Health Canada recommends breastfeeding/ chest feeding exclusively for 6 months with continued complementary feeding until 24 months or longer.

✔️Establish a healthy movement and nutrition pattern to help support weight loss. (Diabetes Canada)
▪It comes as no surprise that this is an important step.
▪This is something we all know, but can be difficult to put into practice.
▪This is where NDs really shine! See your ND for more support in this area.

✔️Keep up with your post partum screening tests. (Diabetes Canada). Set recurring reminders in your calendar!
▪Once you have had gestational diabetes you are more likely than someone who has not to develop type 2 diabetes. On going screening is important!!

Are you familiar with Gestational Diabetes (GDM) screening?

🩺The preferred screening approach in Canada is a 2-step approach.

1️⃣ STEP 1: All women should be offered screening between 24-28 weeks of their pregnancy. The test used is a standardized non-fasting 50g glucose challenge test (OGTT), with blood glucose measured 1 hr later.
🍬 Yup this is the test where you are given the really sweet drink, then asked to wait... 🪑

2️⃣ STEP 2: Is based on the results of step 1
If your result is under 7.8 mmol/L, no further testing is required and it is unlikely that you have gestational diabetes.

If your results is 7.8−11.0, you will be asked to do another test. This is a 2-hour 75-g oral glucose tolerance test with fasting blood glucose at 1-hour and 2-hours.
The results of this will determine whether or not you will be diagnosed with gestational diabetes.

If your results are 11.1 mmol/L or higher, you will be diagnosed with gestational diabetes.

While this test is certainly not a favorite, it is really important!
Undiagnosed gestational diabetes can have very real, very negative impacts on both your health and your babies health long term. 😟
