Our PET CT myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) offers a safe and effective way to assess heart health, even for patients who can’t complete a traditional treadmill stress test.

Using a tiny amount of a radiotracer called rubidium, our team captures detailed images of blood flow to the heart at rest and under stress. With its short half-life, the tracer is safe and quickly leaves the body.

This advanced imaging helps our dual-trained physicians provide accurate results while keeping patients comfortable and able to resume their day right after the scan.

Experience the newest digital PET CT technology at MIC.

Patients referred to MIC for PET CT receive care, utilizing the latest digital PET CT technology. Our PET CT scanner is the same model that supports advanced research and clinical applications at leading medical institutions, including the University of Alberta Hospital.

The Discovery MI Gen 2 PET CT integrates advanced imaging capabilities with a design focused on patients: reducing scan duration, lowering radiation exposure, and generating high-clarity images. The Discovery's advancements are significant for oncology and neurology, facilitating earlier and more accurate detection of small tumour deposits and enhancing diagnosis and treatment planning.

Advanced software tools enable radiologists to assess tumour activity with increased accuracy. This precision supports oncologists and other specialists in evaluating tumour response to treatment and determining appropriate subsequent interventions.

At MIC, we believe in investing in the future of diagnostic imaging to support the best possible outcomes for our patients.

Dr. Lucy Jamieson, a pediatric radiologist, shares her journey and experiences working in clinic and Edmonton hospitals. With over 20 years of experience, she discusses the unique aspects of imaging in children, including the preference for non-radiation techniques like MRI and ultrasound, and the challenges of needing anesthesia for younger patients. Dr. Jamieson highlights advancements in imaging technology, such as faster MRI sequences that reduce the need for sedation, ultimately improving patient care. She also reflects on the collaborative and supportive nature of her medical team, the complexity of pediatric cases, and the emotional fulfillment of helping children and their families through difficult times.

Thank you, Dr. Jamieson!

MIC Participates in the annual Servus Edmonton Marathon

The MIC team showed up in a big way at the annual Servus Edmonton Marathon, with four members completing the 21km Health Solutions Half Marathon. Radiologists Dr. Lucy Jamieson, Dr. Ernst Boshoff, Dr. Hefin Jones, and Director of Technology and Innovation Jeff Vandersteen didn't just run for the personal challenge; they ran to make a difference.

This year's marathon included a charity challenge that inspired runners to raise funds for important causes. The MIC team chose to support the Stollery Children's Hospital Foundation, a cause close to their hearts due to their work in pediatric imaging. Their dedication helped the 2025 Servus Marathon set a new fundraising record, with over $77,000 raised for various charities.

Dr. Lucy Jamieson, reflecting on the experience, shared, "I love being part of the Stollery and helping in kids' healthcare." She says that while the middle of the race is the worst, the start and finish lines are the best part. She also appreciates that the Edmonton Marathon is "local, flat, and convenient."

The team's participation highlights how MIC’s commitment to community and pediatric care extends beyond the clinic and into their personal lives. Their presence on race day showcased the powerful connection between healthcare professionals and community action, all in front of more than 15,000 spectators who lined the Boston Marathon-qualifying course.

Congratulations to Dr. Jamieson, Dr. Boshoff, Dr. Jones, and Jeff Vandersteen on an impressive race and for their strong commitment to bettering our community.

A new standard of care has arrived in Alberta with the introduction of non-surgical pulmonary thrombectomy, a minimally invasive procedure that removes life-threatening blood clots from the lungs.

Using fluoroscopy imaging, a catheter is guided through a vein and into the heart, where it is directed to the lungs, allowing clots to be safely extracted. This advanced technique offers a faster, safer alternative to open-heart surgery or clot-dissolving medications, especially for patients at high risk.

First piloted in March 2024 at the Royal Alexandra Hospital and the University of Alberta Hospital, the procedure is now being regularly performed at those sites, covering the entire Edmonton Zone.

This cutting-edge approach restores blood flow quickly with minimal recovery time, making it a breakthrough option for patients who are not candidates for conventional treatments.

MIC Medical Imaging is proud to support this advancement through the expertise of our radiologist partner, Dr. Kiran Reddy, who is part of the skilled, multidisciplinary Interventional Radiology team delivering this life-saving care (virna.mic.ca/about/).

Watch Dr. Reddy explain the procedure and hear from a patient whose life was changed by it in this CTV News feature: 3 Edmonton hospitals adopt new blood-clot removal procedure as standard. https://www.ctvnews.ca/edmonton/article/game-changing-rapid-blood-clot-removal-procedure-now-standard-at-3-edmonton-hospitals/

A new, minimally invasive procedure to remove blood clots introduced earlier this year has become the standard at three Edmonton hospitals.
