This World Sight Day on Thursday, October 10th we are joining and the global community to focus the world’s attention on the importance of eye care in young people and inspiring children everywhere to love their eyes. When kids can see they can get an education, play with friends, and fulfill their dreams.
450 million children have a sight condition the requires treatment, with many unable to access affordable, available eye care. Together with we are creating a world where every child has eye health that is accessible, available and affordable.
Every day, young people miss out on learning and social opportunities because of a vision issue that could be treated, corrected and often cured. 90% of vision loss is preventable or treatable. Yet many young people live in areas of the world with little to no access to eye care. No one should live with vision loss simple because of where they live.
Children in low-and-middle income countries with vision loss are 2-5x less likely to be in school. That’s just one reason we are joining to raise awareness of the need for accessible, available and affordable eye care for everyone this World Sight Day.
A simple pair of glasses can is one of the most effective health interventions for children, reducing the chance of failing a class by a staggering 44% (The Lancet Commission). That’s why this World Sight Day we are joining to shine a light on the importance of eye health for all children, everywhere.
Vision impairment in children can severely impact educational outcomes, contribute to low self-esteem and future socio-economic potential. 90% of children living with vision loss live in low- and middle-income countries with little to no access to care.
