This is a great metaphor for talking with kids about mask wearing, distancing, and all the other things we can do together to minimize virus transmission. From Nemo: "swim down!"

This is a beautiful picture of parent-child relationship in action. While Alanis Morissette sings for The Tonight Show, her 4 year old daughter "... hit her mom with the headphones, covered her mouth and asked questions about the lyrics. The smiling Morissette patiently answered and continued on with the show."

The singer turned her performance of "Ablaze" into the most adorable take-your-kid-to-work moment.

Play is the language of children — which is why play therapy can help kids speak the unspeakable.

I'm sending this note out to my clients:

First, my plan for keeping the office safe for everyone who visits
- I’m asking everyone that comes to my office to wash your hands first thing when you get here. If you’d rather use your own hand sanitizer instead, that’s fine too. When you wash your hands, you’ll now be able to use a freshly laundered single-use hand towel rather than a shared hand towel. Finally, while keeping office toys and furniture clean and disinfected has always been a priority for me, I am stepping up the frequency and scope of both cleaning and disinfecting.

If you have any concerns about coming to the office, let me know. In some cases, I can provide services over the phone, or online, and there is no cancellation fee if you cancel due to illness or because you’re concerned about exposure to illness. Please do contact me to cancel if you or your children are showing symptoms of any illness.

Advice for guiding children through this time of uncertainty is not much different from other disaster-type scenarios (floods, fires, etc.) that will happen from time to time. This article has three simple guidelines:

https://www.psychologytoday.com/ca/blog/thinking-about-kids/202003/children-covid-19-what-parents-should-know

The article is a quick read, but here are the main points:

*Your kids trust you. If you stay calm and teach them to protect themselves, they'll feel okay. Your reactions are how they interpret the world.
*Use this as a teaching opportunity. This is a great time to reinforce basic hygiene we should all be practicing all the time. You can also use this as a great time for modelling good media consumption behavior. Go to trusted sources like the CDC and WHO and listen to experts, not random people you bump into on the web.
*Be conscious of media in the background. Keeping informed is important. More information is not necessarily better than good basic information. Carefully monitor what your children are exposed to. You are a better conduit of information than unfiltered news in the background.

I would also add that when news is changing as fast as it is right now, it is easy to be overwhelmed by all the media. Constant exposure to media reporting can be harmful to adults as well as children, contributing to feelings of hopelessness, anxiety, and depression. Get the information you need to stay safe and up-to-date, but make sure to look away, too.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions. ~ Jeanne

Basic hygiene and turning off screens should be your go to moves

I'm a huge proponent of the Collaborative & Proactive Solutions approach to solving challenging behaviours in kids. Here's a review of research supporting the model.

My children started to watch 'Mister Rogers' Neighborhood' with me, and what they loved about it showed me what they really need.
