At VCA clinics across the Edmonton region, our commitment to care extends beyond the exam room. Recently, our team organized a community food pantry dedicated to supporting families and pets in need.
We provided essential supplies to ensure that beloved pets in at‑risk households could remain healthy and cared for. By easing the burden of pet food costs, we helped families redirect resources toward other critical needs like housing and healthcare. Our outreach emphasized that every pet deserves nourishment and every family deserves support, regardless of circumstance.
Through this initiative, VCA Canada reaffirmed its mission: to nurture not only the well‑being of animals but also the resilience of the community that loves them.
We would also like to take a moment to thank the Mustard Seed for allowing us the space to host this outreach!

Today is manager appreciation day and the team at Riverbend wants to express our heartfelt appreciation for the incredible work our manager Nicole does behind the scenes. Your steady leadership and tireless dedication to keep our Riverbend hospital running smooth means the world to us and is so valued. Beyond the daily operations, we are especially grateful for the way you extend our mission into the community. When not at work Nicole loves spending her time with her kids and grandkids or traveling with her husband.
Thank you for being the quiet force that makes such a big difference—for us, for our patients, and for the community we serve.

🐾 Meet | Vanessa, Ralph, and...Ralph 🐾

Growing up, Vanessa always had a loyal companion by her side, her dog Ralph. In fact, she had two Ralphs! “Yup, my first two dogs, they were both named Ralph.” Wherever she went, Ralph was there too. He showed her what true companionship looks like, and how powerful the bond between people and their pets can be.

Vanessa remembers her second pup Ralph, a German shorthaired pointer, sitting quietly beside her while she played with her little doctor’s kit. "I’d listen to his heart with a toy stethoscope, check his ears, and look into his eyes. He’d just sit there patiently and let me do whatever I wanted.”

That bond inspired Vanessa’s path in science, medicine, and animal care. But for her, it’s never just about medical outcomes, it’s about emotional ones too. "Stats say that of the number of people within a city that have pets, only 50% of them have access to vet care. So there's 50% of owners out there who can't get to a vet regularly. And often, the people who benefit most from the love of a pet are the ones facing the biggest barriers. That’s why we have .”

Through initiatives like our Pet Pantry and rabies/vaccine clinics, VCA Canada provides hundreds of thousands of dollars in food, care, and services each year. From supporting local humane societies and rescues, to funding surgeries and offering medical advice for displaced pets, we’re committed to making sure families and pets in need are never left behind.

Vanessa says she often thinks back to her younger self, sitting on the floor with Ralph, listening to his heartbeat with a toy stethoscope. "Ralph never once got a bill, and that’s the kind of care and compassion I’m proud to help bring to communities today.” 💙

It’s ! 🐶🐱

Part of our program, the and are all about making sure families don’t have to face pet parent hardships alone. We bring quality food and veterinary medicine for dogs and cats directly into neighbourhoods, and we do it with empathy. No judgment. No questions asked, just support. Because we know that behind every pet is someone doing their best, and sometimes a little help makes all the difference.

These events are entirely run by VCA Canada staff and qualified volunteers with the support of generous donations from compassionate partners and aligned organizations in the area.

No matter the circumstance, all pets deserve quality food, medicine, and a supportive ear for their families. The human-animal bond, and the connection to the community, are at the core of all we do.

Check out our team at a recent Pantry event in and follow us on Facebook to stay up to date with these initiatives and the next public event .💙

On World Kindness Day, we’re reminded that compassion extends to every living being—including the pets who bring joy to our lives.
Celebrating today means showing extra love to our furry friends, remembering that small acts of kindness—like patience, empathy, and respect—make a big difference in the health and happiness of animals and their families.
Here are a few simple ways you can show kindness to your furry friends today (and every day):
Extra patience: Take time to comfort pets during grooming, training, or vet visits.
Healthy treats: Surprise them with nutritious snacks that show love without compromising health.
Playtime: Dedicate a few extra minutes to their favorite game or walk.
Gentle touch: A calm cuddle or scratch behind the ears can mean the world.
Routine care: Kindness also means keeping up with check-ups, vaccines, and preventive care.
Thank you for trusting us with your pets’ wellbeing. Together, let’s make kindness a daily habit that enriches the lives of animals and the people who love them.

Cancer is a dominant cause of death in older dogs and cats, but early detection can make a huge difference.

Here are a few ways you can support your pet’s health:
🕵️‍♀️ Know the signs 🕵️‍♀️
Lumps or bumps, sudden weight loss, changes in appetite, or unusual fatigue.

📅 Don’t miss your regular veterinary check‑ups 📅
Routine exams and screenings help catch problems early.

🖥️ Ask about diagnostic options 🖥️
Radiographs, bloodwork, and ultrasounds can provide clarity if something seems off.

💙 Focus on quality of life 💙
Treatment isn’t just about medicine. It’s about comfort, nutrition, and emotional support.

is about hope, prevention, and compassion. By staying informed and proactive, you give your furry family members the best chance at a long, healthy life.

As our beloved pets age, their health needs evolve—often in ways that aren’t immediately visible. That’s why we strongly recommend annual bloodwork for senior pets. Just like routine checkups, blood tests play a vital role in detecting underlying health issues early, before symptoms appear.
Senior pets are more prone to conditions such as kidney disease, liver dysfunction, diabetes, and thyroid imbalances. These can develop silently and progress quickly if left unchecked. With yearly bloodwork, we can monitor organ function, identify changes over time, and tailor care to your pet’s specific needs.
Take Johnny for example! Before initiating further arthritis treatments for him, the veterinarians performed lab work to assess organ function, especially liver health. This precaution is important because some arthritis medications, like NSAIDs, can impact liver function. In his case, routine pre-treatment screening revealed elevated liver enzymes, leading to the diagnosis of an unrelated liver condition. Fortunately, the early detection allowed for a tailored treatment plan that addressed both the arthritis and the liver issue safely and effectively.
If your pet is over the age of seven, now is the perfect time to schedule their wellness screening. We’re here to support every stage of their journey—and yours.

🎃 Tomorrow’s the big night 🎃 and today’s the perfect time to make sure feels safe, fun, and welcoming for everyone in our neighbourhoods, including our pets.

Whether you're setting out treats, prepping costumes, or planning your route, a few thoughtful choices can make a world of difference:

🐾 Keep candy out of paw’s reach and have pet-safe snacks nearby
🕯️ Light up walkways for comfort and visibility
🔕 Create a “quiet zone” for pets away from the doorbell and costumes

Here’s to a paws-itively safe and inclusive Halloween for all. 💙

Halloween isn't always as cute as this kitten, it can be a spooky time for pets! Loud noises, strange costumes, and constant doorbell rings can trigger anxiety or fear. To keep your furry friends safe and calm, consider creating a quiet space away from the commotion, and avoid dressing them up unless they're comfortable in costumes. Keep candy out of reach, especially chocolate and xylitol-sweetened treats, which are toxic to animals. If you're expecting trick-or-treaters, make sure your pet is secured indoors to prevent accidental escapes. And if you have any concerns about your pet’s behavior or safety during the festivities, don’t hesitate to reach out to your veterinarian or clinic staff—they’re your best resource for guidance and peace of mind. A little preparation goes a long way in making Halloween fun and stress-free for everyone, pets included!
