Have you ever wondered what it actually takes to don the white coat, or where the next generation of experts gets their first "real-world" practice? It’s a journey that starts long before the title. One paved with years of grit, late-night study sessions, and intensive clinical rotations where students transition from textbooks to hands-on care for pets like yours.

By providing a supportive environment where future vets can bridge the gap between textbooks and the exam room, we’re helping shape the high-standard care of tomorrow. This week's spotlight is on Erica who shares about her time at VCA Canada Uniacke Lakes Animal Hospital.

"I had a great time as a DVM student at Uniacke Lakes Animal Hospital this summer. I gained hands on experience in a variety of positions in the clinic, with the technicians, assistants, and doctors. They provided opportunities to ask questions, learn, and grow with a dedicated and caring team. I got to watch procedures, help with client care, and assist in different diagnostics. I want to work in small animal general practice, and Dr Pollard is an amazing mentor who taught me so much about compassionate care. I am very grateful for my experience this summer"

Thank you Erica for giving us a glimpse into your journey. Mentoring students like you is one of our favourite ways to give back to the profession we love. We are so excited to watch you succeed and can’t wait to see the positive impact you’ll make in the industry. 💙

There is something so special about hitting the open road with your favorite co-pilot. The extra snacks, the shared scenery, and that sleepy head resting on the center console.

But as veterinarians, we also know that the "getting there" part is where things can get a little unpredictable. Our pets don't always understand the change in routine, and as we look ahead to 2026 travels, we want to make sure your adventures are as safe as they are fun.

Here are a few reminders from our team on how to protect your greatest companions on the road.

Where is the furthest you’ve ever traveled with your pet? We’d love to hear your favourite road trip memories (or your best travel tips) in the comments! 👇

✨🐕Forget 'New Year, New Me.' We’re all about 'New Year, More Years.' 🐕✨

We’ve put together a vet’s version of a 'glow up' list, focused less on the aesthetics and more on the longevity. Here’s how to set your dog up for a healthier 2026.

This , as we settle into the new year, we keep finding ourselves looking back at one specific afternoon just before the holidays.

Our team had the immense privilege of spending time at The Mustard Seed hosting two events for some incredible folks and their beloved companions. We know that when times get tough, the bond with a pet becomes even more vital, they are family, comfort, and home, all wrapped in fur.

Thanks to our friends Royal Canin and our program, we brought food for dogs and cats of every age and size. But more than the kibble, we cherished the conversations. We saw firsthand that the love these families have for their pets is fierce and unwavering.

It was an honor to share a little warmth, offer some advice, and ensure that hundreds of pets went into the holiday season well-fed.

Thank you to The Mustard Seed for opening your doors to us, and to the families who allowed us to support their best friends. These are the connections that nourish our community. 💙

Another year of snowy paws, stolen spots on the couch, and that specific look they give you when dinner is precisely one minute late.

But our greatest companions don’t know the calendar is turning. They don’t care about resolutions or "new beginnings." To them, tomorrow is just another day to be near you.

That’s the beauty of it. 💙

As we close out 2025, our promise for 2026 remains the same: to protect the health of those companions who give us everything without saying a word.

To our incredible veterinary teams, from our front desk heroes to our RVTs and Veterinarians, thank you for your tireless dedication to the health and well-being of Canada’s pets. 🩺

✨ Wishing all our clients and their furry companions a safe, happy, and healthy New Year! ✨

To our wonderful community of pet parents,

On this quiet Christmas Day, we hope you are wrapped up in the warmth and comfort of home, surrounded by the people you love, and of course, your most cherished companions.

We know that pets aren't just animals; they are the family members who listen without judgment, offer endless snuggles, and provide that beautiful, unconditional love that truly anchors us through every season of life. They are the quiet (and sometimes chaotic) heart of our homes.

Thank you for allowing us the privilege of caring for these irreplaceable members of your family throughout the year. Your dedication to them inspires us every day.

From the entire team at , we are sending you peace, joy, and profound gratitude today. May your heart be full and your lap be warm! 💙🎄

Twas the night before Christmas, and the house was all neat, with soft blankets arranged for a safe, cozy treat. The stockings were hung, filled with toys and with cheer, for gifts that were safe were the best ones this year!

The pets were all nestled, prepared for their sleep, While visions of vet-approved biscuits did creep. Mom in her comfort, Dad starting to doze, with no high-fat ham scraps left out for their nose.

When through the front door came no sudden clatter, for the pets were secured, no need to cause chatter! We kept them contained with a gate swift and quick, protecting their safety from holiday slick.

The tree was secured, no danger in sight, with all low-hung ornaments tucked out of reach and of light. The cords were protected, the plants put away, ready for safe, happy moments throughout Christmas Day!

The table was cleared of all sweets and all spice, just bowls full of water and dog-friendly ice. We kept puppy's quiet space ready and neat, a harmonious haven, oh so discreet.

We checked all the presents and wrappers beneath, and offered new bones that were safe for the teeth! No ribbons, no strings, no need to feel dread, just the sound of our loved ones asleep in their bed.

We finished the checklist, and locked down the door, prepared for the morning and much, much more. Then we gave them one snuggle, so gentle and deep, Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good sleep! ❤️

🚨 Counter-Surfers, Beware! Holiday Foods to Keep LOCKED DOWN 🔒

If your pet is an Olympic-level counter-surfer, the can be the most dangerous time of the year!

With extra treats, unattended baking, and rich leftovers everywhere, the risk of accidental poisoning or severe illness skyrockets. Our teams want to help you stay ahead of your sneaky companions by highlighting the top foods to guard against this season.

🚫The "Forbidden Feast" List for Counter-Surfers 🚫

Chocolate which contains Theobromine and can cause toxicity, vomiting, and seizures.
Xylitol (Sweetener) found in sugar-free products = LIFE-THREATENING hypoglycemia & liver failure.
Grapes and raisins found in stuffing, fruitcakes, and cookies can cause acute kidney failure.
Onions, Garlic, Chives found in stuffing, gravy, and dips cause red blood cell damage (anemia).
Rich, fatty foods like turkey skin, bacon grease, and excessive gravy can cause severe pancreatitis (painful inflammation).
Cooked turkey bones, ham, or poultry bones can splinter and cause intestinal obstruction.

Stay mindful this holiday season and keep the emergencies under wraps! If you suspect your pet has eaten something dangerous, don't wait for symptoms to appear.📞 Give us a call immediately!

This week's story comes from a passionate who is three summers strong at the VAERC! 💪

Spotlight On: Logan V. | DVM Student, VCA Canada Vancouver Animal Emergency and Referral Centre

"Coming to VAERC with an interest in specialty practice was one of the best decisions I could have made. The management team made a real effort to place me in areas that matched my interests, and the specialists took the time to explain cases, demonstrate procedures, and answer every question I had. At the same time, I never felt like just an observer; this position allowed me to actively practice my clinical skills, including history taking, client communication, and blood draws, while also pushing me to deepen my knowledge of diseases and make the most of my time there. I left VAERC with strong references, a greater appreciation for both emergency and specialty practice, and a marked improvement in my clinical abilities. I would highly recommend applying to VAERC if you are interested in emergency or referral practice, I have no regrets."

Thank you Logan for sharing your experience, your peers and colleagues have only spoken highly of you and your work at the hospital. We couldn't be more proud to be alongside you on your journey to becoming an incredible !💙
