Scarlet W-Y, Registered Massage Therapist

Scarlet W-Y, Registered Massage Therapist Thorough therapeutic treatment and deep relaxation. Scarlet’s technique is slow, rhythmic, and gradual as she thoroughly treats areas of pain and discomfort.

A central goal in Scarlet’s sessions is to decrease the pain experience by calming the nervous system. Therefore, though she uses deep tissue, active release, kinetic massage, PNF stretching, and trigger point release techniques when appropriate, the overall experience is intended to be deeply relaxing. Scarlet is a forever learner with a deep interest in understanding pain intervention and body work from all perspectives. Scarlet received thorough training in anatomy, physiology, assessment, and treatment at MH Vicars School of Massage Therapy where she graduated with honours in 2017. Since then, she has received further training in yoga and body rolling as home-care; kinetic massage of the shoulder; orthopedic assessment.; pain science and the biopsychosocial model; and trauma-informed bodywork. Scarlet’s treatment room is a safe, kind, judgement-free space. She works with people of all ages and stages, including pregnancy.

I have been following the ice or no ice debate for a few years. My general rule is - do what makes you feel better. But, the argument against using ice after a soft tissue injury (strain or sprain) is increasingly convincing. Contrary to intuition, there is little evidence to support ice as effective treatment for an acute injury. In fact, ice may actually delay healing. Though, it does often reduce pain. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Here is an updated guideline, coming from a more holistic framework that replaces the old RICE (rest, ice, compress, elevate) following injury. According to this guideline, the injured area should be protected and rested for 1-3 days with movement in the pain-free range resuming quickly and exercise emphasized. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What do you think? Do ice and rest after injury feel second nature to you?

As many of you know, I love recommending hip extensions for low back pain.

Figure two can be done with or without a resistance band with hands planted on the wall or a chair and knees slightly bent.

This action encourages strong glutes and stable SI joints which can be key components of low back pain. And, done slowly while breathing, hip extensions send safety signals to the nervous system, changing the pain experience. 🙌

Hi wonderful people! You may have seen massage therapy placed in phase one of reopening on the Alberta website. This was a mistake. We are in phase two, which will be "no earlier than June 19th". Reopening also depends on the recommendations of our professional associations, availability of PPE, individual preparedness, and personal judgment. 💛💛

Our Story

My technique is slow, rhythmic, and gradual as I thoroughly treat areas of soft tissue dysfunction. I work by the principle that calming the nervous system invites muscles to soften and treatment to be most effective. Therefore, though I regularly use deep tissue and trigger point release techniques, the overall experience is deeply relaxing.

I have experience treating a wide variety of conditions such as frozen shoulder, headaches, nerve compression (including “sciatica”, thoracic outlet syndrome, and carpal tunnel syndrome), TMJD, plantar fasciitis, chronic sprains and strains, whiplash, and more.

I am a forever learner with a deep interest in the human experience, the nervous system, and the musculoskeletal system. I am also interested in the power of conscious breathing, pain science, and the mind/body connection. I spend much of my time reading, watching, and listening to material as well as attending workshops and seminars with the intention of growing as a massage therapist.

My treatment room is a safe, kind, judgement free space and my goal is long-term relief and postural changes. I begin sessions with listening, discussion, and assessment so as to develop a treatment plan to suit your desired outcome and experience. I end sessions with stretching, strengthening and other home care recommendations so the healing can continue long after the massage has ended.
