A couple of days ago, we marked a milestone: 37 years of the Alberta Diabetes Foundation 🔬🧬

But this story didn’t start with us...it started with a spark of possibility.

Back in 1979, Raymond Rajotte arrived at the University of Alberta with a bold vision: what if the fragile insulin-producing cells known as pancreatic islets could be isolated, preserved and transplanted to help people living with type 1 diabetes?

Through the 1980s-90s, Dr. Rajotte and his team moved from theory to practice: in 1989 they achieved Canada’s first human islet transplant. That success, while imperfect, showed hope wasn’t a distant dream...it could be real.

Then, in 2000, the world spotlight turned to Edmonton when the “Edmonton Protocol” was launched: patients with type 1 diabetes became insulin independent for the first time through this refined islet-transplant technique.

With that success as foundation, in 2002 the Alberta Foundation for Diabetes Research refreshed its identity and became the Alberta Diabetes Foundation...committing to drive not just one breakthrough, but a legacy of innovation, care and hope 💙

Today, 37 years later, ADF stands for more than pioneering science 🧪
It stands for every researcher in the lab, every person living with diabetes, every community partner, and you...the donor, sponsor, volunteer who believes change is possible.

Thank you for being part of this journey! Because of you, we’re looking forward to a future where diabetes no longer defines lives.

Sir Frederick Banting was more than a soldier. After serving with courage as a medical officer in World War I, he returned home with a determination to save lives in a different way.

In 1921, working alongside Charles Best at the University of Toronto, Banting made one of the most extraordinary discoveries in medical history...insulin 🔬

Their work transformed diabetes from a fatal diagnosis into a manageable condition, offering hope to millions around the world.

Banting’s sense of duty never faded. During World War II, he once again offered his skills to serve Canada, researching aviation medicine before his untimely death in 1941. His legacy...courage, compassion, and discovery, lives on in every life saved by insulin.

Today, as we remember those who served and sacrificed for our freedom, we also celebrate Banting and Best’s lasting impact on humanity.

💙 Continue their legacy by supporting diabetes research and care right here in Alberta.
