Traditional Chinese Medicine has a few different opinions on trying to keep cold and flus at bay that we don’t usually think about, as well as a different view on pathogenic factors.
Anything that can invade the body is deemed a pathogen, and this can include cold, heat, damp, and wind. This will then determine the symptoms we may experience during this particular cold or flu.
TCM does like to focus a lot more energy on prevention and keeping the body and immune system in tip top shape. In order to do this TCM suggest eating warm foods and avoiding cold foods, greasy foods and sugary foods, managing stress, getting enough sleep, going to your acupuncture appointments, moving your body in a form of physical activity that you enjoy, drying your hair immediately after showering and making sure to keep your feet and abdomen covered.
Sometimes all the prevention in the world doesn’t stop a cold or flu from grabbing hold, so TCM will suggest eating foods or drinking liquids that help either cool or heat the body depending on the pathogen, going for acupuncture to help rebuild Wei Qi and expel pathogens, and avoid sour foods as sour things bring energy inward which we don;t want when trying to expel pathogens.
