The Calm Room is a pilot project started by 6 students in their 1st year of the MSc Occupational Therapy program at the University of Alberta. The room is a non-academic, safe space where students can go to de-stress and engage in fun, relaxing activities such as LEGO, puzzling, crafts and even virtual reality! The Calm Room project was funded by the Heroes for Health grant as well as some contributions by the faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine and department of Occupational Therapy. Using this funding, two Calm Room locations have been established, one at Corbett Hall on the Edmonton campus and one on the Calgary campus. The funding is being closely tracked to ensure it is being optimized and used for evidence-based features. Some of these features include dim lighting, room design that includes nature and calming colours, comfortable furniture, engaging activities and snacks and beverages, all of which have been recognized in the literature as being beneficial for mental health and wellbeing.
That being said, the aim of the Calm Room initiative is to promote mental health and wellness within the student population, by creating opportunities and providing a space proven to reduce stress and anxiety. Based on the long-standing Occupational Therapy theory that “doing” is therapeutic, we believe that this room allows students to ‘do’ more than just study and ‘be’ more than just students. Students often get caught up in the eat, sleep, study cycle, but they deserve to have opportunities on campus that fall outside of this often destructive cycle. Postsecondary students experience a significant amount of stress as they are pushed to excel in their studies, and in order to attain the high levels of performance expected of them it is essential that they have the chance to engage in meaningful self-care and leisure activities. The common misconception that in order to be prepared for the stresses of the ‘real world’ they should ‘suck it up’ can actually be very damaging, and thankfully such mindsets are going out of style in favour for more positive ones.
We believe that the Calm Room and all it stands for helps foster an inclusive community as well as an atmosphere that values mental health and wellbeing. As such, our hope is to open more locations in other buildings around the University of Alberta campus so we can reach and care for more students. Preliminary results are showing that students who visit the Calm Room experience reduced levels of anxiety, and we hope that these positive findings will encourage other faculties and departments to invest in similar rooms for their students. Finally, we are dedicated to partnering with other health and wellness initiatives on campus to help make it easier for students to access the mental health services they need by streamlining existing services and advocating for more services to address the issues and hardships our students face.
