Here are 5 things optometrists notice that you might not:

Squinting - Often a sign of uncorrected vision or eye strain, even if vision feels “okay.”

Head tilt or leaning forward - The body compensates to see more clearly or reduce blur.

Frequent blinking or eye rubbing - Can point to dryness, fatigue, or irritation that people normalize.

Poor posture when looking at screens or books - Leaning in close can signal focusing issues or prescription changes.

Subtle headaches or eye fatigue patterns - Especially after screens, reading, or driving — many people think this is just “normal.”

If you are noticing any of these signs, it’s time to book an eye exam!

Alberta is taking a bold step in education for Doctors of Optometry.

The AAO was thrilled to join partners from the University of Waterloo School of Optometry & Vision Science/Waterloo Eye Institute, Mount Royal University, and the Alberta College of Optometrists, alongside our Council member Dr. Alia Cappellani, OD, FAAO, FSLS representing the Alberta Association of Optometrists, for an inaugural meeting exploring optometry training in the province.

The collaboration was inspiring, with incredible synergy among partners. We left with a clear plan for next steps, including concrete actions to explore program delivery, financial models, and regulatory requirements. Mount Royal University’s modern and inspiring campus was incredibly welcoming, and we were impressed with their innovative approaches to learning.

The Government of Alberta’s $300,000 commitment to this feasibility study reflects strong leadership and a shared vision to grow Alberta’s health care workforce, retain local talent, and improve access to primary health care across the province.

Doctors of Optometry are essential primary health care providers. Developing local education pathways is a strategic investment in a stronger, more sustainable health care system and demonstrates what collaboration between government, post-secondary institutions, and professional organizations can achieve.

We look forward to turning this plan into action with our partners and contributing to Alberta’s leadership in health workforce innovation.

Little eyes, big lessons 👀

Alberta optometrist Dr. Tahsin Rashid loved reading to a Grade 1 class and chatting about how to keep eyes healthy for all the adventures ahead. Dr. Rashid is the creator and author of the Little See’ers™ book series, an innovative collection of children’s stories that blend vision science, emotional literacy, and self-awareness.

His work helps children understand not only how their eyes work, but also how their feelings and focus shape the way they see, learn, and experience the world. Healthy vision helps children thrive, and every child should have an eye exam every year.

Vision problems aren’t always easy to spot – your child may not even notice them. From routine eye exams to urgent care, optometrists check for healthy development, vision issues, and eye health concerns that can affect learning and growth.

February is Age-Related Macular Degeneration Awareness Month. 💙

AMD is a progressive eye disease that affects central vision, making everyday activities like reading, driving, and recognizing faces more difficult over time.

In the early stages, AMD may be symptom-free — which is why routine eye exams are so important for early detection. 🔍✨
