✨ Meet OASIS Conference speaker Lisa ✨

Lisa was born and raised in Delta, British Columbia, and enjoys family time, volunteering with a therapeutic horse riding program, and long walks in the river valley. She shares her life with her husband Barry, who grew up on a farm in Namao, Alberta, and had a long career with CN as a Heavy Equipment Operator. 🌿🎨🧩

Since Barry’s diagnosis with Primary Progressive Aphasia in 2022, Lisa has been his care partner, learning strategies through speech-language therapy to support his communication. With guidance from Dr. Esther Kim and support from the CARE Program and the Glenrose, Lisa focuses on using meaningful strategies to help Barry every day. 🗣️💛

✨ Meet OASIS Conference speakers Anita & Amanda ✨

Anita’s story is one of incredible resilience. Before a severe car accident, she was a Sr. Advisor and Chief of Staff in the Government, thriving in high-pressure leadership roles. After a traumatic brain injury, she faced a cognitive communication disorder and many challenges, relearning basic tasks like reading, speaking, and cooking. Art therapy became a source of healing and creative expression for her. 🎨💛

Amanda, Anita’s daughter and a nurse at the U of A Hospital, has been by her side throughout this journey, providing support, care, and insight from a healthcare perspective. Together, they share their lived experience with aphasia and recovery, offering a unique and inspiring perspective to future speech-language pathologists and the wider community. 🗣️👩‍⚕️✨

✨ Meet OASIS Conference speaker Annika Hanson ✨

Annika’s journey in speech-language pathology began in high school when she volunteered with The Chatter Program. The meaningful impact she experienced—and the fun she had—sparked a passion to pursue a career supporting autistic individuals. Today, Annika is the Coordinator of the Chatter Program, dedicated to fostering inclusive and welcoming communities that support social communication. 🌟🗣️

She is also a member of a multidisciplinary autism assessment team, working closely with families, psychologists, occupational therapists, a physical therapist, and a neurodevelopmental pediatrician. Beyond assessments, Annika visits schools and preschool programs in Indigenous and rural communities, providing support to a wide range of students and offering whole-class programming to strengthen communication skills in everyday environments. 🏫💬

What Annika loves most about being an SLP is the variety; meeting new people, visiting new places, and working with diverse populations. While she enjoys working with all ages, she has a special passion for supporting adolescents as they navigate communication during this pivotal stage of life. ✨👩‍🎓👨‍🎓
