“I was told hormone therapy isn’t safe for me because my mom had breast cancer.”
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you’ve heard that before — you’re not alone. And you’re also not hearing the full story.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
For over 20 years, many women have been denied hormone therapy (HRT/MHT) because of outdated interpretations of the 2002 Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) — a study that has since been revised, reanalyzed, and clarified many times.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Here’s what we now know:
-Most modern hormone therapy is bioidentical (17β-estradiol + micronized progesterone) — very different from what was used in 2002.
-For most healthy women under 60 or within 10 years of menopause, HRT is safe and beneficial.
-Family history of breast cancer is not an automatic “no.” In many cases, hormone therapy can still be considered — especially when lifestyle, genetics, and personal risk factors are reviewed together.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Let’s also remember: Women are not only their breasts!!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We all have a breast cancer risk — but we also have a much higher lifetime risk of:
💚 Heart disease (the #1 cause of death in women)
💚 Osteoporotic fractures
💚 Cognitive decline and dementia
💚 Depression and poor quality of life
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Hormone therapy can reduce many of these risks and support long-term health — when prescribed appropriately, monitored carefully, and tailored to you.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So let’s stop letting fear, misinformation, or outdated data make decisions for us. Ask questions. Review your personal risks and benefits. And make informed choices about your midlife health — not fearful ones.
