Up to 80% of dry eye is from meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) as shown in this video. We have a number of vertical glands along our eyelids that secret oil that lubricates your eyes. It should come out in an olive oil consistency. When the oil becomes thick and stagnant our tears evaporate too quickly which can lead to burning, sharp pain, watery eyes, and blurry or fluctuating vision. Chronic MGD can cause inflammation of the eye lids and can result in gland atrophy which is permanent damage to the glands.
The patient in this video was treated with IPL with gland expression to remove the old hardened oil. IPL targets multiple underlying causes that contribute to MGD so is a very effective way to improve dry eye signs and symptoms.

HAPPY WORLD SIGHT DAY!

October is the month that's not only spooky season, but ocular health awareness as well!
World Sight Day serves as a reminder that EVERYONE (young and old) should prioritize their eye health. The goals of our doctors is to protect the eyes of our patients, for good eyesight now and tomorrow.

What are some things that can help improve our eye health at home?

1.It is important to take regular breaks during activities such as reading or using digital devices

2.Wear eye protection when using tools and chemicals that could damage the eyes.

3.Smoking and UV exposure should also be avoided, for example, by wearing sunglasses and hats when outdoors, to prevent eye diseases.

Why do some people not realize they need glasses?

The brain is highly adaptable and can learn to interpret visual information as it gradually gets blurrier over time. This can cause people to be unaware that their vision is changing and becoming blurry. When shown their vision in their new prescription they are SHOCKED at the difference in clarity. This can occur in patients as they develop cataracts, in children who have never worn glasses, or in patients who have not had an annual eye exam.

A routine exam will ensure your glasses and contact lenses which allow you to function at your best level, and will reduce strain associated with blurry images.
