Before yoga studios dotted Alberta, there was a professor who believed in the benefits and wanted to share it with Albertans.
In 1966, Dr. Mohan Singh, a professor of exercise physiology at the University of Alberta, introduced two yoga courses.
Enrollment was three times what he expected.
At a time when yoga was misunderstood and even viewed with suspicion, Dr. Singh helped share the physical and psychological benefits with students and community members one class at a time. He also aimed to establish its credibility through academic study and research.
In 1976, he became the first President of the Yoga Association of Alberta.
His vision helped lay the foundation for yoga in this province.
Fifty years later, we are still building on that legacy.
