So many fun things to do in winter. You could (with the help of Halifax event offerings):
Stroll through Halifax public gardens
Go out for a winter wonderland hike - gentle or challenging. There are a wealth of trails listed and available - dependent on weather via https://nstrails.com/ and other sites
Go cross country skiing
Try snowshoeing
Explore Point Pleasant or Shubenacadie parks
Take the Dartmouth ferry - The Halifax ferry is the oldest saltwater ferry in North America
Chase frozen waterfalls - again many websites can guide you in your area. Here is just one: https://www.todocanada.ca/25-waterfalls-to-explore-in-nova-scotia/
Explore an art gallery or museum
Visit the library
Go mall walking
See a Mooseheads or Thunderbirds Game
One of my particular favourites - have a walk along the beach - wrap up and take a picnic!
See one of the many, and beautiful viewpoints around Nova Scotia
And finally, and equally fantastic,..snuggle up with a good book, a hot chocolate and watch the beautiful snow

Whatever you're doing, keep safe super safe, help each other and call on us if you need us!

We are thrilled with the response to our request for support for our raffle and the donation box for Beacon House. We always knew that our 'customers/friends' were nice people!

Becky has taken over 100lb. in weight of food donations and other items directly to Beacon House food bank and we collected $200 in raffle ticket sales. We completed the draw 16th December and the winning ticket holders were: LV - Christmas tree, CB - mugs and DC - Godiva chocolates. Congratulations to the winners, but huge, huge, huge thanks to all for supporting and donating so kindly. I'm sure that Beacon House will make excellent use of all that has been collected.

Have a safe and Merry holiday everyone and a very festive.....and safe New Year! We're all hoping that next year will be better....and we hope that even though our Christmas and holidays may be very different again this year, that you are able to find joy and connect with loved ones. My sincerest thanks to all, Debbie x

It’s PhysioDirect’s pleasure to support Beacon House this holiday period.

Beacon House says that it is a ‘Beacon of Hope for those in need in our community. We serve Fall River, Bedford, Lower Sackville and surrounding areas.’ They help families and individuals in the Bedford/Sackville/Fall River/Hammonds Plains area who have been faced with financial hardship because of job loss, reduced employment, medical issues, psychological or physical challenges, and many other life events. Beacon House is a member agency of Feed Nova Scotia and relies purely on donations.

We at PhysioDirect are raffling three prizes:

A delightful and decorative Christmas tree
A Godiva chocolate selection in a gold planter
Two unique pottery mugs - handmade by the director

Raffle tickets are $2 each and all ticket sales will be donated to Beacon House.

Tickets will be drawn on Thursday 16th December and the winner will be notified by phone. All prizes must be collected by end of clinic day on 21st December

Please consider buying a raffle ticket to support this important charity. You can purchase tickets in the clinic at reception. Thank you everyone and we wish you a very, very Merry Christmas.

We're so grateful for your comments and recommendations 'C', very happy to help!

"I just wanted to take a few moments to thank you. The problem with my shoulder started last summer and progressed to the point that I was in constant, intense pain. My GP referred me to you a few weeks ago and we started therapy the first day I contacted you, by telephone (due to the virus). You were a great help from the start. Within days I felt progress. Now, the pain has diminished to the point I have full, painless, mobility again....and the pain does not wake me up several times per night..

I am continuing with the exercises you suggested, although I sometimes think I am completely healed.
I am very grateful for your patience and understanding. I have been, (and will continue), highly recommending you to all I come in contact with. My friends and family have seen the progress and results of only a few weeks of your care. Again, thank you very much.'

The following is related to those who have experienced a in-hospital stay due to Covid-19, but also is relevant to those who may have recovered at home but who may still have residual difficulties. We're so sorry that you have been impacted but we can supply support and distanced treatment to progress your recovery:

According to the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) and the World health Organisation (WHO):
Long term rehabilitation needs:
Following discharge, rehabilitation professionals can provide graded exercise,
education on energy conservation and behaviour modification, home
modification, and assistive products, as well as rehabilitation for any specific
individual impairments. During the long-term recovery of severe COVID-19,
patients may benefit from pulmonary rehabilitative interventions, which
target physical and respiratory impairments, and include a combination of
graded exercise, education, activity of daily living, and psychosocial support.
In many contexts, pandemic related constraints (physical distancing, limited
human resources and limited public transport) and infection risks mean that
tele-health is likely to be required following discharge. This could be
extended to include remote exercise (e.g. “virtual group” education and
exercise) and peer-to-peer support from COVID-19 patients who have
received the appropriate training. Rehabilitation services located in people’s
communities are often best placed to deliver longer-term care.

I had a total knee replacement and went to Martin for physiotherapy on my "new knee" and the surrounding muscles. Martin was extremely knowledgeable and professional. As I was doing exercises on my own, he felt the best use of my time with him would be to concentrate on breaking up scar tissue, reactivating muscles that I hadn't been using due to walking with pain for many years, stretching and bending the muscles, and making sure I was now walking correctly. Martin was personable and friendly, and his office was clean and inviting. The desk staff was friendly and accommodating as well. I attribute much of my fast recovery time to being able to have physio with Martin twice weekly and I know I will be going when the second knee gets replaced. I highly recommend Martin and PhysioDirect!

05/05/2020

Another nice comment, thank you, we're grateful to have you 'visit' us!: • Extremely accurate assessment skills and diagnoses
• Gets to the root of the problem quickly and educates the client about the issue
• One-on-one sessions where treatment is provided the entire time—with instructions for home and a little conversation or humour at the same time
• Professional in every way
• Friendly, welcoming, and funny
• Professional and friendly administrative staff, easy to book appointments
• My daughter had never found anything that helped her issue and did not expect treatment to work but has been shocked at results that came after only a few treatments and have been long lasting.
• I was told that I would have to “live with the discomfort” in my feet but after being seen by Martin and understanding the problem, having treatment, collaborating with a pedorthist, and exercising at home it has pretty much resolved (bunions) and I have been able to live my life the way I want with walking everyday like I used to.

Again, our thanks for letting us know, we so appreciate it. Debbie

Boy have we got some very kind and thoughtful patients! Thank you for these lovely comments, we love receiving them!: The team at Physio Direct are more than pleasant to deal with. With any visit or phone call Debbie is more than happy to help you in any way she can and makes you feel like family vs a client. Martins approach to physiotherapy is in my opinion by far the best to "properly" recover from an injury. Martin doesn't look at a injured part, he looks at an injured body. His approach is always person and injury specific. Every treatment has the patient’s best interests in mind, always willing to add adaptations to every hurtle or situation encountered along the way to recovery. He explains in depth without confusion why he is recommending and performing each treatment and what "we" expect to see happen along the way.

I was referred to Martin by a very close friend from the community years ago for other smaller injuries. Within the last year I had been suffering from a life changing fall and was being treated elsewhere (not of my choosing). With a lot of push I was finally placed in Martins care where I knew I should be. I had been in touch with this friend over the past year and he knew my situation. I recently explained to my friend what I had seen in my own self improvements within a short period of time with his treatments. He responded, " Martin changed my life, I am sure he will change yours!"

I have referred to Martin as a hidden gem when I explain his approaches and recommend him to others with injuries. With his vast, high level, sports injury knowledge and his diverse "hands on" and "one on one" treatment sessions and plans I would place my "physical" side of my life in his hands any day!

In saying all this as Nova Scotians we are going through diverse times (April, May 2020) The Physio Direct team has been by my side for all needs small or big. They have changed their ways to accommodate not just me, but everyone in "their" care. Utmost, this means the world to "me" as my injury does not just include me, it includes my family. As I had stated at the beginning, "I" am treated like family, not a client! If you are injured and have the drive, time and self determination to put forth to get yourself back to 100% pre-injury state than Martin Bull and his team at Physio Direct are your physiotherapy providers hands down!!!!

We are taking the risks of this pandemic to both our clients/patients/visitors and staff very seriously and assure you that to continue to assist you with rehabilitation and pain management, we are implementing additional barriers and hygiene methods;

• You can wait for your appointment, separate to other visitors.
• Our staff will be hand washing diligently and ask that you do the same at the start of your appointment and after.
• We maintain the required 6 feet of social distancing in our reception and our administration will endeavor to always ensure that they withdraw to an effective distance when you approach.
• Where the physio must apply a manipulation or other technique then they will apply as much distancing as possible but will ensure they wear a mask at that time and ensure excellent hand hygiene, both before and after.
• Any equipment that you may have to handle is surface disinfected after each use – including the payment terminal. We would ask that you use ‘tap’ for payment cards as possible.
• You may see staff wearing personal masks – this is not because they have symptoms but to protect both you and them from potential contamination
• Should anyone not be comfortable coming into the clinic, we are investigating the possibility of tele consultation via skype/WhatsApp and phone. Martin can then view your status, check efficacy of exercise and positioning etc. and answer questions on your programme or recovery. Of course, you are very welcome to email any questions to Martin, physio in the interim and he will respond as soon as he is able. Contact Martin via martinbull@eastlink.ca

Should you have any questions about the above or any other topic please contact Debbie, either on this page or via 902 414 6022

We will do our absolute best to be there for you safely and to ensure that you are as safe as possible when you are in our care. Please take care of yourselves and your loved ones and adhere to the recommendations of the Chief Medical Officer of NS, as do we.

Some excellent advice from an internal email and from a reliable source: COVID-19 Guide - latest bulletin from St. George’s Hospital, London
Virus Detection:
The simplest way to distinguish COVID-19 from a common cold is that the COVID-19 infection does not cause a cold in the nose or cough with cold, but it does create a dry and rough cough.
The virus is typically first installed in the throat causing inflammation and a feeling of dryness. This symptom can last between 3 and 4 days. The virus is typically first installed in the throat causing inflammation and a feeling of dryness. This symptom can last between 3 and 4 days.
The virus typically then travels through the moisture present in the airways, goes down to the trachea and installs in the lungs, causing pneumonia that lasts about 5 to 6 days. Pneumonia manifests with a high fever and difficulty breathing. The Common Cold is not accompanied, but there may be a choking sensation. In this case the doctor should be called immediately.
Experts suggest doing this simple verification every morning, breath in deeply and hold your breath for 10 seconds. If this can be done without coughing, without difficulty, this shows that there is no fibrosis in the lungs, indicating the absence of infection. It is recommended to do this control every morning to help detect infection.
Prevention:
Avoid drinking ice water or drinks with ice cubes. Ensure that your mouth and throat are always wet, never DRY. You should drink a sip of water at least every 15 minutes. WHY? Even when the virus enters water or other liquids through the mouth, it will get flushed through the oesophagus directly into the stomach where gastric acids destroy the virus. If there is not enough water, the virus can pass into the trachea and from there to the lungs, where it is very dangerous.
COVID-19 has a large size (diameter of 400-500 nanometers) so face masks can stop it, no special face masks are needed in daily life. If an infected person sneezes near us, stay 10 feet (3.3 meters) away to allow the virus to fall to the ground and prevent it from falling on you.
When the virus is on hard surfaces, it survives about 12 hours, therefore when hard surfaces such as doors, appliances, railings, etc. are touched, hands should be washed thoroughly and/or disinfected with alcoholic gel.
The virus can live nested in clothes and tissues between 6 and 12 hours. Common detergents can kill it. Things that cannot be washed should be exposed to the Sun and the virus will die.
The transmission of the virus usually occurs by direct infection, touching fabrics, tissues or materials on which the virus present.
Washing your hands is essential. The virus survives on our hands. In that time many things can happen, rubbing the eyes, touching the nose or lips. This allows the virus to enter your throat. Therefore, for your good and the good of all, wash your hands very often and disinfect them.
You can gargle with disinfectant solutions (mouth wash etc.) which eliminate or minimize the amount of virus that can enter the throat. Doing so removes the virus before it goes down to the trachea and then to the lungs.
Disinfect things touched often: phone, keyboard, mouse, car steering wheel, door handles, etc.

Stay safe everyone

From the Government of Canada - to clarify: Symptoms of COVID-19
Those who are infected with COVID-19 may have little to no symptoms. You may not know you have symptoms of COVID-19 because they are similar to a cold or flu.

Symptoms may take up to 14 days to appear after exposure to COVID-19. This is the longest known infectious period for this disease. We are currently investigating if the virus can be transmitted to others if someone is not showing symptoms. While experts believe that it is possible, it is considered to be rare.

Symptoms have included:

fever
cough
difficulty breathing
pneumonia in both lungs

The World Health Organization (WHO) has assessed COVID-19 as a pandemic. The assessment by the WHO is not unexpected.

In Canada, our health system is prepared for this situation. Since the outset, the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC)—along with public health authorities at all levels of government across the country—have been working together to ensure that our preparedness and response measures are appropriate and adaptable, based on the latest science and the evolving situation.

At this time, PHAC has assessed the public health risk associated with COVID-19 as low for the general population in Canada but this could change rapidly. There is an increased risk of more severe outcomes for Canadians:

aged 65 and over
with compromised immune systems
with underlying medical conditions
Our public health efforts will continue to focus on containment to delay the onset of community spread by rapidly identifying cases, meticulously finding close contacts and using tried and true public health measures such as isolation and social distancing.

In the event of community transmission, these actions will continue as long as feasible to interrupt chains of transmission in the community and to delay and reduce an outbreak where possible.

In order to mitigate the impacts of COVID-19, everyone has a role to play. It takes more than governments and action from the health sector to protect the health and safety of Canadians. Each of us can help our country be prepared in the event of an emergency by understanding how coronavirus spreads and how to prevent illness.

For individuals
Canadians should continue to think ahead about the actions that they can take to stay healthy and prevent the spread of any illness, especially respiratory infections.

Now and always during cold and flu season, stay home if you are sick. Encourage those you know are sick to stay home until they no longer have symptoms.

Since respiratory viruses, such as the one that causes COVID-19, are spread through contact, change how you greet one another. Instead of a handshake, a kiss or a hug, a friendly wave or elbow bump is less likely to expose you to respiratory viruses.

Practise frequent hand hygiene and coughing and sneezing etiquette. Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces, such as toys and door handles.

These are the most important ways that you can protect yourself and your family from respiratory illness, including COVID-19.

Make a plan
Fill your prescriptions
Stock up on essentials but avoid panic buying
How to care for those who are ill
Get reliable information
Communicate with family, friends and neighbours

03/16/2020

Hi valued customers,

We’re taking the Corona Virus/Covid 19 outbreak very seriously and following recent recommendations from the Chief Medical Officer for Nova Scotia (11th March 2020) and protocols advised by the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) we are applying tight parametres to our practice to protect patients/clients, staff and visitors. The questions we ask each client/patient/visitor are:

Question 1: In the past 14 days, have you traveled outside of Canada?
Question 2: In the past 14 days, have you been in close contact (within 2 meters) with a confirmed case of COVID-19?
Question 3: In the past 14 days, have you been in close contact with a person with fever OR a new onset (or exacerbation of chronic) cough who has travelled outside of Canada within 14 days prior to their illness onset?
Question 4: Do you have fever, or symptoms of a fever, OR new onset of, or worsening of, a chronic cough?

Should any of the answers be ‘yes’, we are asking clients/patients to avoid making appointments and asking that they wait two weeks before calling again to rebook. However, Martin Bull, clinical director here is available to provide guidance for your injury/difficulty/physical limitation via email on martinbull@eastlink.ca . Martin is rarely available via phone as is mostly working with patients in the clinic and wont be able to return calls due to demand, so email is definitely the best route for gaining advice on first aid, injury alleviation, rehabilitation and steps you can take at home to initiate your recovery. Martin will respond as soon as he is able on a first come, first served basis.

Should the answer be ‘No’, then we will be absolutely happy to take your booking. We are applying additional hygiene measures in the clinic as an extra precaution. To avoid anyone needing to wait in the general reception, whilst the infection is at it’s current level, we are providing chairs in our area for your use.

Please be confident that we are doing our best to ensure that the clinic environs are safer for all and to reduce every possibility of cross contamination and we hope that everyone understands the above protocols. We also direct you to our website: physio-direct.ca for information relating to specific conditions and their management and our page for additional contact and advice.

Of course, everyone hopes that the Corona Virus/Covid 19 will be contained and limited as soon as possible and to this end, we will follow all recommendations and will not take your health, and that of your families for granted!

Hoping that everyone and their loved ones keep safe!

Becky's thoughts; Health: It is not stationary. There is no fixed end point. There is no such thing as too late, or too early to the game. Health is our mind body connection and it ebbs and flows with our lives. We are constantly changing, as is our overall well-being.

Health: It’ is not about temporary quick fixes. It is about developing long term, sustainable behaviours which support your well-being. It is individual, to love and to cherish, through good times and in bad.

Remember what is good for you may not be what is best for someone else, and with that comes freedom to choose your own path. We are here to ensure that you are considered as an individual. We will listen and help you to build a program that is individual to you and your health goals.
