💔 Recognizing the Signs of Su***de & Self-Injury in Children & Teens 💔
As parents, caregivers, and friends, it’s important to recognize when a child or teen may be struggling with thoughts of self-harm or su***de. Many kids suffer in silence, but there are warning signs that can help us step in early and offer support.
🚨 Warning Signs of Suicidal Thoughts:
- Talking about feeling hopeless, trapped, or like a burden
- Expressing thoughts of wanting to die or disappear
- Withdrawing from family, friends, or favorite activities
- Extreme mood swings, increased sadness, or anger
- Giving away belongings or saying goodbyes
- Sudden calmness after a period of distress (which can be a sign of a decision being made)
⚠️ Signs of Self-Harm (Cutting, Burning, etc.):
- Unexplained cuts, burns, or bruises (especially on arms, legs, or stomach)
- Wearing long sleeves or pants, even in hot weather
- Finding sharp objects like razors or broken glass in personal spaces
- Isolating more than usual or avoiding physical contact
- Expressing deep shame, guilt, or self-hatred
