History Reclaimed. Community Shared.

Two handcrafted benches made from reclaimed wood from the historic Baxter Bridge have been placed at the Splatsin Community Centre.

Built by the team at Splatsin Development Corporation (SDC) and Splatsin Homes, the benches were completed and delivered on March 10, 2026.

The wood used to build them comes from the former Baxter Bridge near Enderby. When the bridge was decommissioned, SDC salvaged the untreated bridge decking and is now transforming the wood into benches that will be placed at locations across Secwépemcúl’ecw.

Each bench carries a piece of local history — giving new life to the wood while creating welcoming places to sit, gather, and reflect.

Next time you’re at the Splatsin Community Centre, stop by, take a look, and have a seat.

🏠 Splatsin Homes Show Home Construction Update

Work continues to move ahead on the Splatsin Homes show home, with major progress made on site this week.

As of Tuesday, March 10, ground preparation is nearly complete, and slab preparation has now been finished.

The foundation area includes a full radon gas mitigation system designed to safely vent any potential radon from beneath the home. This helps prevent health risks associated with radon exposure and reflects the high standards being built into every Splatsin home.

All stages of construction are being completed under the review of professional engineers and BC building inspectors, ensuring the project meets all safety and building code requirements.

Crews will now be moving ahead with the concrete slab pour and floor system installation in the coming days.

Exciting progress as the first Splatsin Homes show home continues to take shape. Stay tuned for more updates!

Welcoming a new future builder to the Splatsin Homes team.

Splatsin Homes is proud to welcome Kh'Alen Jones (pictured on the left), a Splatsin band member who recently started working with our team as part of his carpentry training.

Kh'Alen is currently a Grade 11 student at A.L. Fortune Secondary School in Enderby and is enrolled in the Entry Level Carpentry Program at Okanagan College in Salmon Arm, where he attends classes four days a week. As part of his training, he will spend one day each week working with the Splatsin Homes crew, gaining hands-on experience in residential construction.

Kh'Alen joined the team on Friday, March 6, and we’re excited to support him as he develops his skills. Our plan is to register him as an apprentice as he continues progressing in the program.

Providing opportunities for Splatsin members to gain experience, training, and careers in the trades is an important part of the vision behind Splatsin Homes. It’s great to see young community members getting involved and building valuable skills for the future.

Please join us in welcoming Kh'Alen to the team.

Progress continues at Splatsin Homes.

Splatsin Homes has received its first shipment of foam blocks, marking another important step forward as preparations continue for upcoming home construction.

These large blocks are now being stored in the warehouse and will be precision-cut to form the insulated wall systems used in the Splatsin Homes building process. Once the warehouse is fully stocked, it will hold approximately 100 foam blocks, giving the team the ability to cut the components needed for 3–4 homes, including the Splatsin Homes show home.

The construction system being used is designed to create durable, energy-efficient homes that can be built efficiently and built to last.

Seeing the materials arrive and the warehouse begin to fill is a clear sign that Splatsin Homes is continuing to move forward and preparing for the next stage of development.

The long-term vision for Splatsin Homes is to support Splatsin, other Indigenous communities, and others seeking high-quality housing solutions that are practical, sustainable, and scalable.

More updates will be shared as construction progresses on the Splatsin Homes show home and preparations continue for future builds.

On Wednesday, March 4, 2026, the SDC Yucwmenlúcwu Civil Construction team, along with partners Aecon and Emil Anderson, welcomed senior leadership and directors to the R.W. Bruhn Bridge project for a site meeting and tour.

As part of the visit, Splatsin Elder and Cultural Coordinator Randy Williams shared the cultural and historical significance of the Sicamous Narrows. Randy spoke about the deep connection between Splatsin and this place and offered a traditional song that honoured the land and its history.

The presentation was very well received by those in attendance and served as a meaningful reminder of the importance of culture, respect, and partnership as this important infrastructure project continues.

The SDC team is grateful for the opportunity to be part of the gathering and to share Splatsin culture and knowledge at the project site.

🦅 Environmental Monitoring Update – Shuswap North Okanagan Rail Trail Project

SDC’s Yucwmenlúcwu Environmental Planning & Management Division has been monitoring a pair of bald eagles nesting along the Rail Trail, just south of the Farmers Bridge.

This male and female pair — who mate for life — have established two nests in the area. As work continues on the Rail Trail project, including the operation of heavy machinery such as an excavator, our Environmental team has been carefully observing eagle activity to ensure construction activities do not cause significant disturbance.

This monitoring helps protect the nesting pair and reduces the risk of nest abandonment. Protecting wildlife while supporting responsible development remains a priority for Splatsin Development Corporation.

We appreciate the ongoing work of our Environmental team in upholding our stewardship responsibilities.

🚧 Shuswap North Okanagan Rail Trail Update 🚴‍♂️

SDC’s Yucwmenlúcwu Civil Construction Division continues to make strong progress on the $12.5 million Shuswap North Okanagan Rail Trail project.

We’re proud to share that the Rosemond Bridge is now complete — a key milestone for the trail. This portion of the work was a true team effort, with collaboration between our Yucwmenlúcwu Civil Construction team and the Splatsin Homes construction team to bring the bridge structure across the corridor safely and efficiently.

Safety remains a top priority. With warmer weather earlier this month bringing more cyclists onto the trail, temporary stop signs were installed at Back Enderby Road after riders were observed crossing without stopping. These measures help protect both trail users and motorists as traffic increases.

Behind the scenes, our crews remain committed to keeping the project moving forward. Recently, on a Saturday near Rosemond Lake, a team member from our Civil Construction team drove the trail to assist and recover a grader after it broke down — a strong example of the dedication and teamwork that keeps this project on track.

This project showcases multiple SDC departments working together to deliver quality infrastructure for our region.

More updates to come as work continues along the Rail Trail.
