It’s official, Emily is now a Certified Lactation Counsellor. What does this mean? Combined support for infant and mom that evaluates the full infant feeding process from mummy to tummy! It also means that services may be covered by your private health benefits under speech language pathology!

I hate to sound spicy, but this needs to be known!

In Ontario, only 3 healthcare professionals are legally permitted and regulated to diagnose tongue ties:
- Physicians
- Dentists
- Midwives

What can the rest of us do?
- state concerns, if we have them
- discuss with families what we are observing
- refer appropriately for diagnosis and/or treatment
- provide options
- provide evidence based information on a topic when asked

Trust your gut! Everyone has their areas of expertise. Everyone has their scope of practice. Know your rights and know where to go to learn more about the scope of practice of that profession. Starting with the regulatory body is a great option!

She’s not a new face at the clinic, but is a favourite face for so many kids and parents out there. Jenn joined me in 2021 and I am grateful every day that she did.

Jenn Kentner is a Communicative Disorders Assistant (CDA) who is a member with the Communicative Disorders Assistant Association of Canada and Speech-Language & Audiology Canada. She works primarily with the preschool and school-aged population. She graduated from the University of Guelph with a Bachelor of Arts and Georgian College with her post-graduate diploma as a CDA.

We have some new faces and some familiar ones that deserve all the attention.

Meet Jocelyn our new/not so new SLP in Fergus! If you’ve been around long enough you may remember Jocelyn from her student placement with Emily! Jocelyn is now a Registered Speech-Language Pathologist with the College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists of Ontario (CASLPO), proudly a part of the team at Wellington County Speech Therapy. She holds a Bachelor of Medical Sciences from Western University, a Master of Science from the University of Guelph—where her research focused on improving mental health in post-secondary students—and a Master of Health Science in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of Toronto
