Nasal Breathing, Its a VIBE!
〰️
Breathing through your nose slows down your air intake. By slowing down the breathing we stimulate the vagus nerve.
This calms and repairs our nervous system.
Not only does this calm us but by breathing less air we allow the gases of carbon dioxide and nitric oxide to accumulate in the blood, resulting in increased blood circulation and improved oxygen delivery to the body and the brain.
Ironically even though we are breathing slower and less air in we are actually supplying more oxygen to our body tissues and brain.

When it comes to your nose👃

1. Keep it Clean:
Use saline rinses or sprays (), aromatherapy inhalers (), diffusers, humidifiers etc. Avoid irritants like cigarette smoke and strong perfumes. Stay hydrated!

2. Keep it Clear:
Make sure to blow that nose! Breathing in and out through your nose and then plugging it until you feel the need to breath, then unplug and breath through the nose will also help break up that mucus so that you can actually blow your nose.

3. Keep it in Use:
By using your nose even when you are congested, it will actually help with the nasal inflammation allowing you better nasal breathing. If you STOP using your nose your body will create even more mucus and inflammation in your nasal passages to slow down the release of CO2

Client Success!
〰️
14 Session of Myofunctional Therapy over the course of 10 months.
〰️
Tongue Tie Release was completed to help with tongue range of motion and to help tongue reach the roof of her mouth so it could stay there at rest.
〰️
The start of her therapy was due to poor sleeping habits, drooling, snoring, constant waking up, tension in facial muscles, and mouth breathing concerns.
End of her therapy resulted improvement in all areas above + more (LOOK AT THAT BITE!)
〰️
Our therapy may be completed but she will continue to use what she learned to ensure that her nasal breathing continues, tongue posture and lip seal remain, and that the correct swallowing pattern remains so that she can continue to breath~sleep~&thrive in life!
〰️
You to can do this! DM me fore more information!

We are getting into detail about the 4 GOALS of Myofunctional Therapy.
Each day will be dedicated to 1 of the 4 GOALS.
ITS OUR LAST DAY!
〰️
DAY 4: CORRECT SWALLOWING PATTERN
〰️
By the time we reach this goal we have mastered breathing through our nose (GOAL 1), keeping our lips closed (GOAL 2) and corrected the tongue posture (GOAL 3).
〰️
When there is "low postured tongue" or a long habit of sucking on thumb, pacifier, clothing etc, most people develop what the myo world calls a "tongue thrust swallowing pattern". This is when we swallow the tongue thrusts forward between the front teeth or sideways between the back teeth.
〰️
This thrusting pattern over time contributes to malocclusion in teeth (open bites), as well as digestive concerns due to swallowing air when eating, drinking, or swallowing your own saliva.
〰️
Does your tongue come through your teeth (front teeth, back teeth OR both)?
Try it: Get in front of a mirror, gather as much saliva as you can, smile big and using your fingers hold your lips and cheeks in that big smile. Now, close your teeth and try swallowing. Was it difficult? Did you notice your teeth open? Did your tongue thrust forward opening up your teeth OR were you able to see it push through open "gaps" of your teeth?
If you answered YES then you could have an improper swallow pattern.

Each day will be dedicated to 1 of the 4 GOALS.
〰️
DAY 3: PROPER TONGUE POSTURE
〰️
This is the goal you are to most likely to read/hear about in the myofunctional therapy world. We want your tongue to rest both day & night with a light suction on the roof of your mouth.
This means, not only should the tip be resting on the roof of your mouth just behind the front teeth, but the middle and back of your tongue should be resting up on the rest of your palate.
〰️
If not being able to nasal breath was not an indicator that you need myofunctional therapy, then where your tongue rests will be.
While your reading this take a moment to see where your tongue is hanging out. If it is sitting on the bottom of your mouth (between your lower teeth) or you are "bitting" it between your upper and lower teeth, then you need to be getting that tongue up to sit slightly suctioned on the roof of your mouth between the upper teeth.
〰️
Try it: place your tongue tip up just behind your front teeth, plug your nose & breath through your mouth, its possible. Now completely suction your tongue up, plug your nose and try breathing through your mouth, it shouldn't be possible.
After we get you to nasal breath (GOAL 1) and keep those lips closed (GOAL 2) getting the proper tongue posture (GOAL 3) will allow you to start improving your daily function.
〰️
Lets talk teeth & proper tongue posture. Yesterday we talked about how the constant force (or lack of force) of our lip muscles can impact the way our teeth grown in or move after orthodontic work. It's the same with your tongue. Tongue muscles are STRONG! Having it up on the roof of the mouth can help with jaw development in children (think of it as our natural expander) and help with stabilization after having braces/Invisalign as it's helping keep that nice "u-shaped" arch.

〰️
DAY 2: LIP SEAL
〰️
Keeping your lips together at rest during the day and when you sleep, without strain or pain, is the second goal we work on in myofunctional therapy.
〰️
When your lips are closed you need to breath through your nose (unless you have another way of breathing :P). If you can not breath through your nose (FIRST GOAL) then you are not going to be able to keep a good lip seal (SECOND GOAL).
〰️
Not only does it help with breathing, but having a good lip seal can impact the way your teeth move. If there is a-lot of "force" daily on keeping those lips closed or lack of "force" and keeping the lips open, this will not only effect the way our teeth come in when we are younger but it will also determine relapse in your orthodontic care.

We are getting into detail about the 4 GOALS of Myofunctional Therapy.
Each day will be dedicated to 1 of the 4 GOALS.
〰️
DAY 1: NASAL BREATHING
〰️
This is the MOST important goal of Myofunctional Therapy. If nasal breathing is impossible the other 3 goals are not going to fall into place.
〰️
I want every single person that I am working with to be breathing through their nose both day and night NO MATTER WHAT.
This means that even with allergies, large tonsils & adenoids, being sick, working out, running etc. I want to help you figure out HOW to start breathing through your nose.
〰️
If nasal breathing never becomes easier then we would work with other healthcare professionals like ENTs or Allergists to help figure out why nasal breathing is difficult. I also like to use products like aromatherapy inhalers & nasal saline sprays/rinses to ensure that the nose is clean and clear so that it is easy for you to breath out of the nose.
〰️
Nasal hygiene is just as important as oral & personal hygiene so starting off keeping that nose clean is going to set the path for the other 3 goals.

The way you breath can have an impact on your overall health!
〰️
Its natures way of filtering the air you breath so that you can deliver clean and well oxygenated air to your lungs. BUT WAIT it doesn't stop there! Breathing through your nose helps create Nitric Oxide, a molecule that helps deliver that much needed, well filtered oxygen to the rest of our bodies.
〰️
Have you done a nasal breathing test? 👃
Take a sip of water & hold it in your mouth for 3 minutes!

Were you able to do it? Was it a struggle? Did it cause pain or discomfort in your facial muscles?

👇 Comment below "I DID IT!" if you successfully were able to hold that water for a full 3 minutes.
👇 Comment below "I NEED HELP!" if you were not able to hold that water, had some facial pain, or even noticed it dribbling out of your lips!

Our faces have changed!
〰️
There has been an average of 20mm difference in the size of our jaws vs the sizes of ancient skulls. This means there is less room for:
👅 Tongue 🦷 Teeth 🌬️ Airway
〰️
But WHY?
〰️
Before, they ate tough meats, raw veggies, nuts -Foods that needed some good old-fashioned chewing! Today, we eat a-lot of soft foods, processed foods, foods in pouches, that doesn't work out that jaw!
Think about it! Less chewing, less muscle use, less jaw growth, and therefore LESS SPACE!
〰️
So why does this matter?
A smaller jaw means:
🚩 Less Space for Teeth - leading to crowing, Orthodontics, and sometimes extractions!
🚩 Less Space for tongue - leading to mouth breathing
🚩 Narrow Airway - leading to Sleep Disordered Breathing and/or Sleep Apnea
〰️
The earlier you start the easier it is to guide the natural development of the jaw. Getting muscles of the face to function optimally at a young age will help guide this growth!

Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy retrains the muscles of the face, mouth to function optimally.
〰️
When mouth breathing, swallowing dysfunction, and sleep disordered breathing go unnoticed or are not corrected, this can significantly impact your overall health, and even effect development in children.
〰️
DM us if you or your child are struggling in any of these areas.
