In honour of May being Vision Health Month, here are some nutrient-rich foods known to assist our eye health!
🥗KALE (Or Leafy Greens) - Leafy green vegetables are rich in lutein and zeaxanthin, which protect the eyes from light damage and reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration.
🐟FISH - Oily fish have oil in their gut and body tissue, so eating them offers higher levels of omega-3-rich fish oil. Omega 3 is key to treating/preventing issues like dry-eye syndrome.
🍊GRAPEFRUIT (Or citrus fruits) - Citrus fruits are rich in Vitamin C, an antioxidant that the American Optometric Association recommends to fight age-related eye damage.
🫘NUTS & LEGUMES - Like Fish, Nuts & Legumes are also rich in Omega-3 fatty acids and contain a high level of Vitamin E.
🥕 CARROTS - YES, it's not a myth! Carrots are indeed healpful in maintaining good eye health. Carrots are rich in beta-carotene, which the body converts into Vitamin A. Vitamin A plays an essential role in vision. It is a component of a protein called rhodopsin, which helps the retina to absorb light. 😮
🥚EGGS - The zinc in an egg will help your body use the lutein and zeaxanthin from its yolk. The yellow-orange color of these compounds blocks harmful blue light (Lights from screens) from damaging your retina. They help boost the amount of protective pigment in the macula, the part of your eye that controls central vision.

Our Story

Fergus Optometry was established by Dr. Vanesh Kathiravelu, who was drawn to practice and raise his family in Centre Wellington by the area’s natural beauty and the warmth, industriousness, and friendliness of the people in the community.

Dr. Kathiravelu has been practicing optometry since 2007, when he graduated from the prestigious Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago, where he completed clinical rotations in advanced ocular disease management at various hospitals throughout the United States. He is certified to prescribe therapeutic pharmaceutical agents and has a special interest in treating conjunctivitis, iritis, and dry eyes. Dr. Kathiravelu is a member of the Canadian Association of Optometrists, the Ontario Association of Optometrists and a member in good standing of the College of Optometrists of Ontario.

Dr. Kathiravelu actively contributes to his profession through his work on the Registration and Evaluating Exam Oversight Committees at the College of Optometrists of Ontario. He is also a Quality Assurance Coach who works with and mentors his peers to ensure that high-quality optometric care is being provided across the province.

In his spare time, Dr. Kathiravelu enjoys spending time with his wife and infant son. He is also an avid sports fan and cheers for the Leafs and Raptors.
