Last week I had the absolute pleasure of sitting in circle with the wise and inspiring Jane Hardwick Collings in Cochrane AB. The intimate workshop, Autumn Woman Harvest Queen, spoke to the transformation in the rite of passage into Menopause, and the cycles of life. We shared our experiences with our own rites of passage leading up to this point. It was such a beautiful day, I am so grateful for the opportunity to share space with Jane and the woman in the workshop. Excited to share what I learned with my community!

Here we are at the beginning of another lunar cycle with the Gemini New Moon. The New Moon represents the Crone in the last of our woman archetypes.

The crone years begin in the retirement years, around 70 and last for the remainder of a woman’s life. The energy of the Crone is that of wisdom, and truth.

At this phase of life, a woman’s fertile years are a thing of the past and the hormones that once cycled through her body on a monthly basis have ceased and she heads into the later half of life with a gentle and inward focus. The grandmother phase. Our modern society doesn’t exactly cheer about this phase of a woman’s life, which is total BS in my opinion. These are the wise years, where a woman shares the wisdom of the experiences of her life with her family and community.

Cool fact! Three types of female whales (belugas, narwhals and orcas) and human woman are the only species on earth to transition through menopause. In the whale pods, the menopausal whales become the matriarch of the pod and shares her wisdom of feeding grounds, breeding grounds etc.

To age well and be filled with the knowledge of the experiences of life to share with loved ones, the wise Crone is such an inspiring archetype. And one to be honoured!

If you have this archetype in your life show them some love and gratitude for their wisdom, and if you are in this phase of womanhood embrace it.

When I was in my mid twenties, the Mother’s in my life began the journey through perimenopause. I remember thinking, I gotta get a handle on this before I go through the journey, so I can journey with more ease than what I had heard these mamas were going though. In particular the night sweats and the hot flashes and insomnia. Other challenges of this right of passage are changes in the length and consistency of the cycle, hormone fluctuations, Osteoporosis, heart disease, memory loss/brain fog, and the fear of the transition.

Perimenopause begins this rite of passage as the body starts running low on eggs and we start losing the opportunity to be fertile. Because we are running out of fertility, ovulation can become more distant which is the cause of more sporadic periods. Our hormones begin to be all over the place and that itself can be very unpleasant as it is not something we have experienced since our teen years.

Heading through this transition, and supporting and nurturing our body, mind and spirit through this somewhat challenging transition is what the wise woman does!

Here are some simple ways to do so...

Support The Liver
Our liver processes our excessive hormones and helping our largest organ do that more efficiently by cutting down on fatty/processed food consumption, moderating or even eliminating the use of alcohol, and beginning to add dandelion tea into our routine as its very nourishing for the liver and our digestion. As a bonus, dandelion is high in calcium to support those beautiful bones

Start Walking and Lifting Weights 🏋️‍♀️💪🏻
Add a movement practice that involves strength training is essential to keeping our bone density up as women can lose up to 20% of their bone density during this transition. A simple movement practice such as walking outside can also promotes a better sleep!

Vitamin D aids in brain health and bone health 🧠🦴

Magnesium 🧘‍♀️😴
Because it’s essential and we don’t get enough of it in our food, and it helps with sleep and stress and muscle cramps, pain etc.

Acupuncture and Herbal Remedies 📍🪴
Acupuncture helps align our chi and the flow of energy as well as our hormones and be of great support during this time. There are also a number of herbs and tinctures that your Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner can recommend to support the body and spirit!

Cycle Tracking and Natural Fertility Tracking 📈
These practices help to recognize the signs of ovulation so you can better predict when to expect a period or understand where your hormones are at. I offer support and education in both of these departments and could help you learn and understand your bodies signs. Hit me up if you are interested to learn how!

I can't believe we are at the last quarter of the Ta**us lunar cycle and we are at the cusp of Gemini season. Time just goes.
As with the third quarter moon we find ourselves at the Autumn of a woman's life and the Maga phase. We hear a lot of the triple goddess, the Maiden, Mother, Crone and as we have been evolving, our life expectancy is much longer than 50 years as it was in the past, the triple goddess has evolved as well and now include Maga.

Maga is from the age of Menopause to old age, 50 -70 ish.

Maga energy is still has motherly vibes of giving and contributing, and it shifts as there is more carefree responsibilities and we become more community minded.

This energetic and biological shift into Maga can begin as early as 35 and last until the Menopause has been reached with the cessation of bleeding for 12 consecutive months, usually around 50+. It's a woman's second puberty. Progesterone and Estrogen start to get a bit wild and all over the place and life can start to feel strange and unusual.

Stay tuned Friday as I will be sharing ways to shift through this transition with ease. Want it delivered straight to your inbox so you don’t miss out? Head over to the website and sign up for emails!

Mother energy is nurturing, caring, loving and creative.

All of this puts a lot of demands on the mother archetype if there is children. Mamas give and give and give and often struggle to take the time to fill up their own cup. Especially in the beginning with small children when the demands of the mother are very high. When my daughter was a wee babe, I was lacking sleep, guzzling coffee to function, staying up late to get “me” time, and eating convenient food instead of slowing down and nourishing my body. This had my blood sugar all over the map, my adrenals strung out and my cortisol high. This is motherhood I thought, I just gotta endure. Fast forward to the toddler years and my levels were all so out of whack, when I would get over-stimulated I would freak out and then have monstrous mom guilt for losing my cool. Ugh when I talk about it now, I just wanna hug that young mama Tan, take away the cup of coffee and replace it with a grounding cup of bone broth, and a hefty serving of protein and a multi-vitamin and pour her a hot salt bath and tell her to take 10!

Easy ways I learned to nurture my hormones in the mother phase:

💊 Multi-vitamin is a must!
Just like in the Maiden phase, we need to supplement our nutrients as our food lacks these days. I take a Women’s Multi meant for those with higher stress, which definitely comes with running a household.

🛌 Prioritize Rest
I know about the me/us time after the kids go to bed and how great that time is. Pick one night a week that is for early bed time and make that a non negotiable. Pour a nice relaxing bath and then crawl into bed afterwards, read or journal. Finding this hard every week, prioritize it during the luteal phase when your body is craving more rest.

☕️ Limit Caffeine
Keep the coffee/caffeine intake below 4 servings a day, and try not to drink too much on an empty stomach. Consuming on an empty stomach can lead to a spikes and crashes in blood sugar, which lead to mood swings and irritability.

Remember, you can’t pour from an empty cup, making yourself a priority in these simple ways has great benefit to a mamas well-being.

Happy Full Flower Moon!🌕🌷

I am loving how May’s Full Flower moon falls on the heels of Mother’s Day and is conveniently timed in our archetypes of woman for Menstural May! The Full Moon relates to the Mother archetype. A mother is a woman in her full expression (fertile), just like the moon in its full brightness. A woman usually goes through this rite of passage with the birth of her first child or around the age of 25-26 and lasts until around 50. Not everyone choses to or have kids so this isn’t limited to just having kids. Creating a project/career/business, and then nurturing and caring for it is the same as birthing a child at this phase of womanhood.

Mother Energy creates, cares, nurtures, loves fiercely and is full of strength.

My passage into Mother when my daughter was born was a struggle as I found it hard to let go of the Maiden. As a freedom loving Sagittarius, being depended on 24/7 was overwhelming at first. It didn't help I was running off of NO rest, copious amounts of caffeine to fuel my days, and was I trying to live that summer in both Maiden and Mother at the same time. I was burning the candle at both ends trying to keep up! I wish I’d known then what I know now. There are so many beautiful, wise ways to nurture the mother after birth that we need to start remembering and sharing so she heads into motherhood empowered and trusting of her ability.

The full flower moon is a good time to recall and reflect on how you transitioned into Mother with the birth of your “creation” (child, business, career etc.)

I love shares, so if you feel called to share about your transition, comment or DM me. Our stories a helpful for ourselves as well as others, that’s how we share wisdom!

Wishing you a great Full Moon! 🌕🌷

On Monday we were introduced to Maiden archetype. Maiden lasts from first bleed until the birth of the first child or 26 ish years old which ever comes first.

Let’s look at how the Maiden can be taken care of and nurtured in the teen years to establish a healthy connection to her inner moon.

💊 A good multi-vitamin
One specifically formulated for teen girls. My daughter uses Easy Multi Teen for Young Women by Platinum Naturals but any one with iron and extra points if it contains fish oil for brain health!

🚰 Stay Hydrated!

🍲 Eat well - protein and veggies, avoid excess processed/fast foods

✋☕️🥤Moderate Caffeine and Excess sugar - limit energy drinks, coffee and soda pop

🛌 🧘‍♀️Allow them time to slow down during their bleed. Offer a bleed pack with a hot water bottle, chocolate, their fave snack. Have someone else do their chores for them, and if they are active give them the opportunity to stay home from said activity. Teens these days are way over scheduled, and the expectations has them on a fast track to burnout. And burnout is not a badge of honour and that narrative needs to shift. When bleeding slowing down, resting and relaxing is a MUST. Making your teen push through in making them go to “practice” only causes more imbalance and unpleasant menstrual symptoms going forward. One missed day of something isn’t the end of the world and has great benefit in the cycle ahead. But…. if they are like my teen and they insist on going, let them.

🍫Have a period kit handy in their backpack or locker. Extra products, some chocolate (dark is high in iron and magnesium) and some other remedies to have on hand incase it surprises them at school!

Have questions about ways to support your teen during this time, don’t hesitate to reach out. If you don’t have a teen but know one, share with them this post or their parent. The more educated the better, once we know better we can do better!

Stay tuned next week as we shift to the Mother archetype.

Have a great weekend!

Using the lunar phases as a guide for my menstrual awareness info emails and posts, we start this week with the First Quarter Moon. This lunar phase relates to MAIDEN archetype.
Menarche initiates the shift from child to Maiden, when a girl reaches reproductive age. This rite of passage can happen between the ages of 9-14 on average and can be earlier or later in some cases.

Once the teen/tween has gone through the proper amount of growth spirts, their body will begin to go through changes such as budding breasts, hair beginning to grow in the p***c region, the hips and pelvis start to change and get a bit wider with a bit of weight gain in these areas to help support healthy menstruation and fertility. All of this attributes to the rise of estrogen in their body, which is also stimulating the growth of the uterus and the endometrial lining inside their body. Once they become a menstruator, their body has to get used to being a menstruator. The brain talking to the glands and making the connections may take time to regulate. They can have shorter or longer cycles and not all of them within the first to second year will be ovulatory cycles until those pathways have been established between the brain the glands and the hormones. It is important to let a teen move through 1-2 years of their cycle before making any big changes. Most normal cycles in this age bracket will be between the length of 21-45 days until their body gets the hang of it.

This rite of passage is a time to be celebrated not shamed or shunned. This can be a challenging time when it happens at a very young age, but know that it will turn into something very empowering.

Please feel free to share with a friend, family member etc who might have a daughter who will be going through this phase soon, or has just gone through the rite of passage.

Think back to the experience of your rite of passage into womanhood when your first blood arrived. How old were you? What was the experience like? Recall if you can, how you felt during this time. If you’d be willing to share your story comment or PM me, I’d love to hear about it!

Here is some basic menstrual awareness. There are four phases to our monthly cycle, just like the moon and seasons. The energy of each of those four phases is different, just like the light of the moon is different and how each season brings a different energy. Woman are not supposed to be the same energy everyday, it’s not how our body was designed.

Let’s break it down:

🩸Menstrual phase lasts 3-7 ish days. Energy is at its lowest and it’s totally normal to feel tired, need extra sleep and more time alone during these days.

🌱 Follicular phase lasts 6-10 ish days energy starts out low but begins to rise. Feeling better as the bleed days end, as hormones estrogen and serotonin start their ascent. Cognition increases as well as feelings of wanting to be social.

🌹 Ovulation phase lasts 2-6 ish days. Energy usually matches the hormones and this is peak time. Peak time in energy, peak hormones, we are feeling really great about ourselves, want to socialize and be seen. We look great as the hormones make us look great in all the right places.

🥀 Luteal phase lasts around 11-14 ish day. Energy starts out high after ovulation and slowly begins to decline with the hormones. With the rise of progesterone our body becomes relaxed and feeling lower energy may be the vibe we feel, feelings of being less social and begin to retreat into our home/space.

Honouring these energetic phases of our inner moon can have a real positive effect on our cycle health and well being.
