This week's exercise feature is Lunges , a versatile movement with tons of functional applications.

Lunges are simple and doing them well makes all the difference.
A strong, stable lunge isn't about how deep you go. It's about alignment, control and technique.

Here are a few ways you can optimize your lunges:
Start standing in a tall, vertical position with ears over shoulders, shoulders over hips and hips over heels.
As you step back with one leg, align your heel with your sitz bone so your feet are like they are standing on train tracks (not on a tight rope). Keep the leg long (straight knee) and active (reach through your heel). This gives you maximum glute activation on the back leg to support pelvic floor engagement.
The front knee tracks over the middle of the foot. Avoid collapsing the arch or rolling the thigh inward.
Stack shoulders over hips so the torso stays upright and supported. This also keeps the load on your lower body muscles optimal. Core should be gently engaged to keep the spine vertical and pelvis stable.
Pause and check your positioning.
Push through the front heel to return back to upright.
When your alignment is right, lunges become an incredible exercise for glute strength, hip stability, balance and functional movements like climbing the stairs.
