This week's exercise feature is more than a movement, it is a technique that is an integral part of various pilates exercises: Table-top with the legs.

To execute and master this important movement technique it is essential to pay close attention where your head,neck,spine and pelvis is in space.

We start by lying supine with knees bent and feet planted on the mat. It is recommended that palms are pressing into the ground besides the body to help create a good lat connection. Creasing at the hips one leg lifts at a time to table top position where you can imagine the shins are tops of the table and thighs are the legs of the table. This subtle movement challenges you to find a good core connection.

The Power of Slow: Why Slowness is Intentional in Pilates

Don't rush the process! If you've ever felt like your Pilates teacher is making you move incredibly slowly, that's completely intentional—and it's where the magic happens.

Pilates movements are performed slowly for three powerful reasons:

Mind-Body Connection & Precision: Moving slowly forces you to focus intensely on every muscle fiber involved. This heightens your proprioception (your body's sense of where it is in space) and ensures you are executing the movement with the precision central to the Pilates method, rather than just momentum.

Muscle Recruitment & Deeper Strength: Fast movements tend to rely on your larger, superficial muscles. Moving slowly recruits your deep, stabilizing muscles (like your transverse abdominis and pelvic floor). This builds sustainable, deep core strength that protects your joints and improves your posture long after the session is over.

Time Under Tension: Slowness increases the time your muscles are actively engaged under tension. This is a highly effective way to safely build lean muscle tone and endurance without bulking.

The takeaway? Slow is strong. Embrace the burn, respect the pace, and feel the difference that mindful, controlled movement makes!

This week’s exercise feature is standing Spine Stretch Forward, a wall works as an excellent feedback prop for this movement.

This beautiful movement encourages spinal articulation in forward flexion as well as invites hamstring length.

For maximizing the benefits of this movement start by standing tall with your back supported by the wall. Heels about a foot distance away from the wall.

Initiate the movement at the base of the skull with a little chin nod on an exhale. Peel your spine away from the way one vertebra at a time sequentially. Your hands slide down the front of your legs until you are in a forward fold. Make sure to lengthen the back body as you round forward and let your sitz bones glide up the wall.

For anyone with tight hamstrings a soft bend in the knees is encouraged.

Pause in the forward stretch for an inhale, and on the exhale slide the hands up your legs and roll your spine back to a vertical position sliding the sitz bones down the back of your legs.

Did you know Lymphedema is a chronic condition affecting millions? It causes persistent swelling, usually in the limbs, and can significantly impact quality of life.

To everyone living with the daily challenges of Lymphedema—the heaviness, the pain, the constant management—we see you, we hear you, and we stand with you today and every day. You are strong, resilient, and never alone.

The Role of Fascia and Movement

Movement and therapeutic exercise are essential components of lymphedema management. The fascia—the connective tissue that surrounds muscles, organs, and lymphatic vessels—plays a critical role in fluid dynamics.

Fascial Stretching and Lymphedema:

While direct scientific research on fascia stretching as a primary treatment for lymphedema is developing, the principles align well with lymphedema management goals:

Improved Mobility: Restricted fascia can impede movement, which is necessary for the pumping action of the lymphatic system. Stretching can improve range of motion, allowing for more effective exercise and movement.
Reduced Tissue Density: Lymphedema often leads to fibrosis (hardening and thickening of the tissue). Techniques that encourage elasticity and hydration of the fascia may help reduce this density, potentially improving fluid flow.

The Significance of Cheryl's Story
Cheryl was a cherished member of our community whose life was tragically taken due to intimate partner violence. Her story is a painful reminder of the urgent need for safe havens and dedicated resources for survivors. By joining the Brunch, Bid, and Bowl event, we honor her memory, transforming a heartbreaking loss into meaningful action. Every dollar raised helps support women and children, offering them the chance for a life free from abuse—a future Cheryl deserved and one we strive to ensure for others.

However, the need for safe haven in the Niagara region remains urgent. We are already seeing the tragic reality of domestic violence and femicide in our community. Every extra dollar raised between now and the event goes directly toward ensuring that Birchway Niagara can maintain and expand its critical services, providing more beds, counseling, and transitional support for women and children escaping abuse.
