Dr. Graham is having a baby!

I’m excited to officially announce that our family will be welcoming our second child on November 6th! We are thrilled for our next adventure and our daughter Emmy is over the moon about becoming a big sister. I will be taking a short time away from practice to heal and bond with my little one, with a return to virtual clinic in the new year.

There’s still plenty of time to book your next follow-up appointment before my maternity leave begins on October 24th, 2022 so that you can keep well in the coming winter months. Any new patients over the next few weeks will also have ample time to get started on their journey too.

You can visit the online booking site, OR email me directly at jaclyn@drgrahamnd.com to request an appointment if you don’t see a date or time that quite fits your schedule.

I will be officially returning on February 3rd, 2023 on a part-time basis and I will be offering Fridays and Saturdays 10 am to 12 pm to get started, with some evenings by request. If you need to reach out to me during my mat leave, I will still be accessible via email or phone but please do allow up to 72 hours to receive a reply.

Please reach out to me if you have any questions!

With care,

You’ve been taking a healthy dose of Vitamin D daily, like clockwork, and your blood levels aren’t improving! What gives?

With our winter days spent inside wrapped up in sweaters Vitamin D levels tend to dip this time of year, which is important to know because we want to protect our immune system and bones all year round! But for those who can’t seem to move the needle even with regular supplementation, I encourage my patients to take a few steps to address the root of what may be going on.

HOW TO TAKE YOUR VITAMIN D
Because Vitamin D is fat soluble, taking your Vitamin D supplement with a large meal paired with healthy sources of fat can improve your absorption. Avocados, nuts, seeds, or nut butters are a perfect way to go.

GET MORE MAGNESIUM
Magnesium is another nutrient we are often getting in suboptimal amounts. As an essential cofactor (meaning we can't do without it), when Vitamin D levels are low magnesium is especially important for improving intestinal bioavailability and Vitamin D activation. Eat more pumpkin seeds, almonds, cashews, dark leafy greens like spinach and kale, black beans, avocados, and even dark chocolate.

IMPROVE YOUR GUT HEALTH
Having a healthy, happy gut is more than just having regular bowel movements. The quality of your bowel movements and the diversity of your gut microbes plays an important role in not only absorbing nutrients like Vitamin D, but new research has associated your gut biodiversity with how well you convert Vitamin D to its active form to have a desired effect. The best way to support a healthy gut is with a home-cooked, wholefoods diet high in fiber from fruits and vegetables and tailored for your needs.

As a busy mom, entrepreneur, Naturopathic Doctor and recovering perfectionist, I am no stranger to juggling more than my fair share of balls. We often find ourselves saying yes when we need to say no, and putting added pressure on ourselves to do well, to keep track of everything, to make sure that nothing “fails,” and when we succeed to keep ourselves humble, put a check mark next to that item and move onto the next.

When you have great goals in mind, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by it all. To forget to celebrate all the little wins, to pat yourself on the back for being courageous and trying something new even if it didn’t work out exactly as planned, and to just step back and take a break, because that is what was needed at that time to get you ready for the next moment.

Remember: Just do your best in THIS moment.

✅ If you have too many balls flying through the air, decide which ones are made of glass and which ones are made of rubber. You don’t need to catch them all.🤹‍♀️

✅ Make sure you’re prioritizing the three basic (and most important) pillars of health - sleep, nutrition, and exercise. For anything above and beyond that, get expert advice.

✅ Connect - stay in touch with old friends, or reach out to groups who have similar goals and can provide a sounding board to bounce ideas off of. A sense of community is more powerful now than ever. Every interaction counts towards building your resilience and keeping you positive when challenges present themselves.

✅ Herbal medicine has a lot to offer when stress related symptoms and fatigue get in the way of you making the most of your day. Adaptogens are a group of herbs that are used to improve resilience to stress, reduce anxiety, and promote wellness. Some of my favourites are Schisandra, Reishi mushroom, Holy Basil, Panax Ginseng, Ashwagandha, Maca, Shatavari, Licorice root, Rhodiola, etc.; each with their own unique makeup that needs to be matched to your unique needs, of course!

✅ Commit your weekends to a healthier self. - If you’re running on adrenaline during the week because of strict deadlines, take the weekend to relax and repair! No apologies. 🧖‍♀️🙌
