👁️ AMD Awareness Month 👁️

What is Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)?
AMD is an eye disease that affects central vision, making everyday activities like reading, driving, and recognizing faces more difficult.

Age is a major risk factor, and AMD is the leading cause of vision loss in adults over 50 in North America. It occurs when waste builds up in the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision.

AMD can progress slowly for some and more quickly for others—often without early warning signs. That’s why routine eye exams are essential for early detection and vision protection.

How is glaucoma treated? 👁️

Glaucoma treatment focuses on lowering eye pressure to help protect the optic nerve and preserve vision. While vision loss from glaucoma cannot be reversed, early detection and ongoing care can slow or prevent further damage.

Common treatment options include:
• Medicated eye drops to reduce eye pressure—sometimes used alone or in combination
• Laser treatments, such as laser trabeculoplasty or laser peripheral iridotomy, to improve fluid drainage
• Surgical procedures, including trabeculectomy or drainage implants, when medication alone isn’t enough
Because glaucoma can progress silently without noticeable symptoms, regular eye exams are essential for early detection, monitoring, and timely treatment. Staying consistent with prescribed treatment and routine checkups helps protect your vision long term.

Did you know there are different types of glaucoma? 👁️
Glaucoma is a leading cause of vision loss and often develops without early warning signs—making regular eye exams essential for early detection and protection of your vision.

Common types of glaucoma include:
• Primary open-angle glaucoma – the most common form, developing slowly and painlessly, often without noticeable symptoms.
• Angle-closure glaucoma – a less common but serious condition that can occur suddenly and is a medical emergency.
• Secondary glaucoma – caused by eye injury, surgery, infection, or certain medical conditions or medications.
• Normal-tension glaucoma – optic nerve damage occurs even when eye pressure remains within a normal range.

Because glaucoma can progress silently, routine eye exams play a crucial role in detecting changes early and preserving vision.
