Doulas make a difference. The International Breastfeeding Centre appreciates doulas , care

In a study by Kozhimannil et al (2013) it was found that "women who had doula-supported births had near-universal breastfeeding initiation (97.9%), compared with 80.8% of the general US population. Among African American women, 92.7% of those with doula support initiated breastfeeding, compared with 70.3% of the general population. These results suggest that access to culturally appropriate doula care may facilitate higher rates of breastfeeding initiation. When supported in their non-medical needs by birth doulas, the diverse, low-income patients of midwives and other maternity care providers may have a greater likelihood of initiating breastfeeding and experiencing the maternal and infant health benefits associated with breastfeeding."

Another study by Hans et al (2018) showed similar results and stated that "doulas who focus on childbirth education, breastfeeding, pregnancy health, and newborn care" and they positively influence "infant-care behaviours". In this randomized controlled trial that mothers who used the services of a doula were "more likely to initiate breastfeeding (81 vs. 74%; OR = 1.72, p < .05)". The interesting thing in this study is that it goes on to say that "the breastfeeding impact was not sustained over time". We believe that the reason for this might be that for mothers to continue breastfeeding after getting help with doula, they then need to have access to continued help, something that our breastfeeding clinic in Toronto provides. Even though mothers initiate breastfeeding they do quit if they do not get help with problems they may encounter, problems such as sore ni***es, a baby who does not latch on, a baby who needs to increase his breastmilk intake, a baby who is fussy and cries at the breast.

Thank you, doulas, for what you do and remember, the International Breastfeeding Centre is there, in Toronto to help you and your patients wherever they live. How to make an appointment? https://ibconline.ca/book-an-appointment/.

I don’t care how many people give you πŸ’© for your baby not sleeping through the night, or to sleep train your baby. Getting up to feed your baby at night goes hand in hand with parenting. It happens and it’s completely normal.

Do you know what I love the most about this photo?

The fact that no one is interfering with this sacred moment.

Mama is holding her baby close. No one is disrupting them. No one is checking if the cord is still pulsing, measuring babies head, weighing baby, putting a tag on baby, asking questions, giving baby a vitamin k injection, removing baby to a warming table... they are simply just left to enjoy the moment!

And that is my favourite thing ❀️

This is worth the read. So true, but so worth it.........

For the exhausted mom who hides a few minutes to cry in the bathroom...

For the mom hidden in the bathroom, because she needs a few minutes of tranquility while slipping tears from her eyes.

For the mom who is so tired that she feels she can't continue, that she would give anything for a moment of peace.

For the mom who cries in her room for having scolded the kids for a nonsense that makes her feel guilty.

For the mom who desperately battles when wearing denim pants because she wants to look pretty and wear them to feel better.

For the mom who asks for dinner pizza because she didn't reach the time to make dinner again as she expected.

For the mom who feels alone, even when she's accompanied.

You're worth a lot.
You are important.
You are enough.

This is a stage, a crazy and challenging stage for all moms.
But in the end everything will be worth it. For now it's hard. Difficult in many and different ways for each of us. We don't always talk, but we all fight, you're not alone.
You are enough.
You give the best of you.
Those little eyes that observe you think you're perfect, they think you're more than perfect.
Those little hands that ask for your arms, they think you're the strongest and you can conquer the world.
Those little mouths eating what you cook, they think you're the best
Those little hearts looking for yours, they want nothing but you.
Because you are enough for them, you are more than enough, mom.
You are wonderful...
