Our Mission:

To enable Canadians to improve their health, safety and quality of life by providing training and community service. We carry out our mission through community service, and first aid, and CPR training. Community Services volunteers include uniformed members who serve communities across Canada, providing first aid and emergency response support, as well as improving the quality of life for people confined to a health care facility through our Therapy Dog visitation program. Our volunteers contribute millions of hours to Canadian communities each year. First aid and CPR Training comprises instructors, volunteers and staff who provide high-quality first aid training and products. Under the guidance of our network of medical and health care professionals, St. John Ambulance is the national leader, setting the standard for training in first aid, CPR and other lifesaving skills. Company Overview
Our History in Canada
St. John Ambulance has a rich and proud history of service in Canada since 1883 that has helped it become the outstanding charitable organization it is today. This includes wartime service at home and oversees (both “ambulance” and nursing divisions), emergency and disaster response, and First Aid and home nursing training and service. John Ambulance celebrates i
ts 125th Anniversary in Canada. John was established in Canada in 1883 under the (then) Dominion Council of the St. John Ambulance Association in Canada. The Dominion Council established nursing units and community services in Edmonton and Calgary in 1897 under the auspices of then Edmonton Town Mayor John McDougall who directed St John training and community service activities in the Province through his office in Edmonton. In 1911, after a period of significant growth in community services membership, and training close to 100 people per year in First Aid to growing populations in the two cities, the St. John Council for Alberta was organized with John McDougall as its first Chair. From 1908 until the mid 1920s St John operated out of McDougall’s garage where training and administration were centred in Alberta. In 1930 St John moved into its first training centre in the Province. The mission of St John Ambulance remains the same (with minor wording changes) after 107 years in the Province – “Enabling Canadians to improve their health, safety and quality of life by providing training and community services”

St John Ambulance in Alberta was instrumental in bringing compulsory First Aid training to the workplace through joint lobbying with the WCB in the 1920s; providing ambulances, training, blood services and First Aid kits to the Canadian military for both world wars; lobbying for statutory First Aid standards in the 1960s and 70s and advising Government of needed changes to the First Aid Regulations throughout the 1990s.

What is an MFR?

St. John Ambulance plays a vital role in critical areas of emergency preparedness and response across Canada. Our Medical First Responders (MFRs) provide lifesaving first aid and help reduce the risk of further injury or illness at public events and gatherings.

Whether at a sporting match, concert, community event, or more, our MFRs provide advanced first aid care, at no cost. Without the assistance of our MFRs, many community-based organizations would not be able to offer first aid coverage at public events.

We are so proud of these volunteers, who arrive at every event ready to help their communities.

An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) can restart a heart during sudden cardiac arrest. They’re often placed in busy public spaces like schools, gyms, transit hubs, and shopping centres.

Today, we pause for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, honouring the survivors of residential schools, the children that never came home, and their families and communities.

Today is also known as Orange Shirt Day, inspired by the story of residential school survivor Phyllis Webstad. Now, wearing an orange shirt has become a symbol of hope, reconciliation, and a commitment to a better future.

The Canada Walk for Veterans, supporting the Veterans Food Bank, was an amazing event that showed great organization and strong community spirit. 🙌

We were truly honored to have the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta join us, showing her support and personally thanking our teams throughout the weekend. Her presence made the event even more special and reminded us all of the importance of supporting our veterans.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this event a success and to those who continue to stand with our veterans. 💚💚
