There have been reported cases of meningococcal disease linked to Umrah travel to Saudi Arabia.

If you are considering travel to Saudi Arabia for the purposes of Umrah, make sure you are vaccinated with a quadrivalent (ACYW) meningococcal vaccine before travelling, as required by Saudi Arabia. The total eclipse happens Monday, and physicians may see patients with eclipse-related complaints.

In the dark about solar eclipse health and safety: INFO 101

According to “Safe Viewing of Solar Eclipses” JAMA patient page, totality of the eclipse lasts only about one to three minutes based on geographic location, and bright sunlight can appear suddenly as the moon continues to move. Even a few seconds of viewing the sun during an eclipse can cause solar retinopathy.

To avoid this, patients should never view the sun or a total solar eclipse with the naked eye or by looking through binoculars, telescopes, or a phone camera. Sunglasses alone also are not safe. Safe ways to view an eclipse include through shade No. 14 welder’s glasses or aluminized Mylar camera filters if totally intact, without any scratches. Eclipse glasses should say they comply with ISO 12312-2 standards

What are the primary symptoms of solar retinopathy?

* 15%Blurred vision
* 10%Color distortion
* 3%Micropsia
* 8%Headaches
* 9%Eye pain
* 6%Scotoma
* 2%Metamorphopsia

All of the above, although many of the symptoms won’t be evident until hours or even days after the damage has occurred. The delay is especially true for eye pain: The retina does not have pain receptors, so patients do not feel the injury when it is occurring

Any worry that eyes damage from solar retinopathy is permanent??

* False.

While damage can be permanent, many patients improve on their own over three to four months without any treatment.

According to Solar Retinopathy, American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, vision changes that are still present 6 months after the injury will likely be permanent, and some people will continue to have permanent distortions (also known as metamorphopsia) and blind spots (also known as scotomas) in their central vision.

Besides eclipse-gazers, which populations are most at risk of solar retinopathy?

* 22%Welders who don’t use protective eyewear
* 8%Those under the influence of recreational drugs
* 15%Children
* 8%Those with psychiatric disorders
* 14%Sun gazers as part of religious ritual
* 7%Sunbathers

All of the above. Solar retinopathy has been linked with using laser pointers as well.

Mental disturbances via drug intoxication or schizophrenia raise the risk, as does any kind of sungazing.

Children are more at risk, not only because they are more tempted to watch an eclipse, but because the child’s natural lens is so clear that it lets more ultraviolet (UV) rays reach the back of the eye, resulting in more severe damage.
