πŸŒ™ BREASTFEEDING MYTH πŸŒ™
"You should never wake a sleeping baby to feed"

This is actually true for babies that are a bit older and are feeding and gaining weight adequately. They will naturally sleep longer and longer, and it is best to work around their schedules, which will continue to change.

Eventually we do want them to be sleeping through the night. However, it is very important to make sure that with a newborn, a baby that is not gaining the proper amount of weight, or if you are having any issues with maintaining your milk supply, that you wake your baby for feedings.

A general rule with newborns: Feed a minimum of every 2 to 3 hours during the day and no longer than 3 to 4 hours at night. πŸ’›πŸ’›πŸ’›

Your baby’s belly is so small at birth! Just about the size of a cherry πŸ’. Then by day 10, it has increased to the size of a large chicken egg πŸ₯š. This explains why babies eat SO frequently - and that they are meant to do this.

Newborns need to nurse around 10-12 times in 24 hours in order to gain proper weight, stimulate mom’s milk production, and avoid issues with jaundice. Some new babies tend to sleep for longer periods (more than 3 hours) and may need to be woken up and encouraged to nurse more often.

A β€œgood” feeding consists of active sucking and audible swallows. When baby finishes eating on one side, offer the other breast. Sometimes switching sides will help wake baby up.

Other ways to help baby stay awake & alert during feeds:
- dim the lights (bright lights may cause him to close his eyes)
- unwrap baby down to diaper and put him skin to skin on your chest
- hold baby in upright position
- walk your fingers up baby’s spine
- hand express milk onto baby’s lips
- gently massage baby’s head and/or feet while nursing

If baby is not nursing often he enough, he could become dehydrated. Diaper output should slowly increase the first week. By around a week postpartum, look for 6-8 *soaking* wet diapers (more for cloth, less with disposables), and at least 2-3 poops every 24 hrs.

Hold the mother, not the baby.⁣
⁣
Because the baby’s being taken care of—⁣
fed, snuggled, and given all the love in the world—⁣
by not only the mother,⁣
but her partner, grandparents, siblings, cousins, and friends.⁣
⁣
But the mother,⁣
may have gaps in her mind from lack of sleep,⁣
may be mechanical in her motions as she’s healing,⁣
may feel more like a mess than a mother,⁣
may be sitting in bed, crying, feeling overwhelmed in her body and life,⁣
may be full of mom guilt because in her mind, "she's not good enough,"⁣
and she’s bleeding, wincing in pain, swollen and emotional.⁣
⁣
And the mother’s that baby's whole world and needs to be seen, so she doesn't disappear into that postpartum fog.⁣
⁣
So, hold the mother, not the baby.⁣
⁣
A mother agrees that her baby matters more.⁣
But she’s hurting, while she’s the person behind the baby,⁣
in the background, making it all happen:⁣
feeding her baby at all hours,⁣
snuggling her baby close to comfort newborn cries,⁣
and being that baby’s everything.⁣
⁣
So, it’s the mother who needs your love.⁣
⁣
And a mother will remember who held her up.⁣
⁣
So instead of β€œI’m coming to see the baby,”⁣
try saying, β€œI’m coming to see you 𝘒𝘯π˜₯ meet the baby, too.”⁣
⁣
Because the mother needs to be held more.⁣
