Button Battery Safety - What to Do (see previous post for dangers and prevention tips)

If you have any reason to suspect a button battery has been ingested, immediately:
-Get emergency medical help - make sure to tell providers you suspect the child swallowed a button battery
-For children over age 1, give 1 tsp of honey every few minutes while on the way to emergency medical help
-Do not induce vomiting
-After being treated, make sure to follow after-care instructions exactly and watch for signs of complications

**SAFETY WARNING**
Button batteries come in many toys, remotes, key fobs, and other devices, and are very attractive to toddlers and young children. Besides a choking risk, if swallowed, button batteries can cause life-threatening damage within two hours of ingestion, causing a chemical burn that erodes tissue down to and including major arteries.
Prevent an emergency:
-Be extra vigilant to keep batteries out of reach. Even battery covers that have screws can come apart easily if dropped.
-If you must use button batteries, look for brands that contain a bitter-tasting coating (Duracell) and/or a color changing dye that will turn the mouth blue (Energizer).
