✨ Engorged? Baby won’t latch? Try this instead! ✨

Reverse Pressure Softening helps soften your breast by pulling fluid back and up into the breast briefly, without pumping, making it easier for baby to latch. It’s a simple trick that can bring instant relief when you’re feeling uncomfortably full!

💡 When to use it:
✔ Baby is struggling to latch
✔ Breasts feel too full and firm
✔ You wake up engorged
✔ Before feeds instead of pumping

💛 How to do it:
1️⃣ Gently press around the ar**la (not the ni**le)
2️⃣ Hold for 50 slow seconds
3️⃣ Feel your ni**le soften
4️⃣ Try latching baby right after!
✨check out the background photos throughout for other hand placement options✨

Why see an IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) for feeding challenges?

We’re healthcare providers with specialized clinical training to focus on the needs and concerns of the parent - baby dyad.

Our role is to PREVENT, RECOGNIZE and SOLVE lactation, breastfeeding and generalized feeding difficulties.

While there are different pathways to become an IBCLC, none are easy. For myself as a nurse I held the theory credentials along with having done a specific program in lactation and breastfeeding. I had to and prove I have completed more than 1000 hours supporting parents with breastfeeding one on one!

I was then eligible to apply to write the board exam to become an IBCLC. Once accepted I wrote! Which honestly felt more difficult than my nursing licensing exam at the time.

I am very proud to be an IBCLC and can’t wait to continue supporting you all ❤️

Warm weather can leave parents wondering how to keep their infants hydrated and what to look for when it comes to dehydration.

Naturally, like you and I, in the heat we all need more hydration.

Offer fluids in between feeds to keep baby hydrated.

Breast milk and formula are all babies need to stay hydrated. Offering additional feeds during these hot summer days will help keep your littles hydrated!

While you can begin to introduce water at around 6 months it is still recommended you provide baby with breast milk or formula as it is the priority. Until about 12 months.

Did you know, baby’s under 12 months are at a higher risk of water intoxication, which and can occur with as little as 4-8oz of water.

Breastfeeding as a Non-Birthing Parent: New Resources from Alyssa Schnell

A parent schedules a prenatal consult with you and explains, “I am expecting a baby via surrogate, and I’m interested in inducing lactation. But I’m not really interested in taking medication. Is it still possible?” Or a parent who is planning to adopt says, “I’d love to induce lactation. I could be matched with a baby tomorrow and bring them home next week… or I could be waiting for a year or more. How do I plan for that?”

In this post, learn some key points about the importance of understanding and customizing a plan for each family:

Burning, shooting pain, white / blanching ni**les, misshapen ni**les that can take the shape of a new tube of lipstick are all signs of a vasospasm.

In an Australian study of 360 participants, 23% experienced vasospasm in the early weeks following birth.

Troubleshooting the latch, trying for a deeper latch, positioning changes and following up with an oral assessment of your infant from a skilled provider can all help.

Assessing the oral anatomy of baby is important. Oral restrictions can cause ni**le compression and a deep latch to be challenging. All relating back to the potential cause of the vasospasm.

I am so excited to support parents in the community and North Peace region! 🥰

I moved to Fort St. John in 2013 from Nova Scotia, never looking back. However after 5 years felt I needed a change and took off to Victoria where I built a life for the last five years. I always wanted to go back up north. While the island is magical, my heart has always been at home in the North. The North is so quiet, peaceful and honestly just more me.

I can’t wait to get to know and serve the community of Fort St. John and the North Peace once again, this time is a different capacity!

I’m looking forward to all the adventures in the snow with my family, camping by the river, hiking the hills, trips to the lake and the long, sunny summer nights ☀️

It’s the slower, northern life for me 😊

I have some new and exciting things coming along with this big change that will help support the northern communities!

Storing breastmilk takes some thought and you do have to be careful!

There are guidelines surrounding temperature and time 🌡️⏳

Always follow your local provincial/ state guidelines

For me living in BC these are the current. Which ultimately is no different than that of other places.
