You'll never achieve a perfect routine. You won't adhere to a plan 100%. You're going to eat too much.

You're going to have days when you can't muster the strength for a workout. And there will be days when you don't drink enough water or get enough sleep.

You haven't failed.

It's not about the destination, it's about the journey.

The streak is over.

Today would have been day 110 of running every day. I'm not injured, and I still love running.

But I woke up this morning and I knew the streak was over before I got out of bed. I fought with my mind over it for most of the day.

This streak has taught me the importance of having a plan. I ran over a 1000kms over the last 109 days with zero plan other than I would run every single day.

I will streak again, but I want to be able to do this for the rest of my life.

The hardest part about being an endurance runner is no one ever asks you how far you ran today...

I joke, I joke

But this did remind me of something important. It's wonderful to be recognized when you work hard at improving yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally.

But recognition should never be your primary motivation for change or else you will burn out eventually.

Focus inward and become a little better today than you were yesterday.

Becoming a certified personal trainer and nutritionist was pretty easy, academically… It was an online course with an open-book exam.

But…

Before I began my own health and fitness journey over 3 years ago:

👎 I was almost 300 pounds.
👎 I could barely get up and down off the floor, and I could forget being able to spend any time on the floor if I got there.
👎 I had severe back pain from a herniated disc that made it a challenge to walk most days, let alone be able to run and play with my kids.
👎 I was physically, mentally, and emotionally unwell, but I just made excuses to myself that “this is just the way I am.”

Fast forward to now…

I’ve lost over 100 pounds and kept it off. I’ve learned what does and doesn’t work—not just from a textbook but from trial and error.

The biggest thing I’ve learned is that it's the small things over time that yield the best results, and it took me longer than I’d like to admit to learn that lesson.
