"Gently roll yourself to your right side as you begin to awaken from your savasana" You may have heard your yoga instructor guide you out of your final resting pose with this suggestion. Why do we roll onto the right side? Let's explore ~
*Physical perspective, rolling to the right supports the bodyβs natural rhythms. Since the heart is positioned slightly to the left side of the chest, rolling to the right keeps it elevated, which helps reduce strain and allows blood pressure to regulate more smoothly after deep relaxation. This position also keeps the stomach above the esophagus, which aids digestion and can feel more comfortable. Plus, it minimizes dizziness when transitioning from lying down to sitting up.
*Energy & Calmness: This movement helps regulate blood pressure to reach homeostasis. It also keeps the Ida Nadi (left channel/cooling energy) active, which helps maintain a calm, relaxed state as you transition to a seated position.
*Symbolic/Cultural: In many traditions, the right side is considered more auspicious, representing the east, sunrise, and, by extension, a new beginning or a refreshed, awakened state.
This ritual of rolling onto the right side honors your heart, your breath, and your body. Yet the truth isβwhether you roll right or left, the most important thing is to listen to your body. Every choice you make on the mat is about honoring yourself with compassion.
